Enter the total number of applicants and the total number of accepted individuals into the calculator to determine the acceptance rate. This calculator can also evaluate the number of applicants or acceptances when given the other variables.

Acceptance Rate Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the acceptance rate of a college or other program that has an application to get in.

AR = TA / AC *100
  • Where AR is the acceptance rate (%)
  • TA is the total number of applicants
  • AC is the total number of accepted individuals

To calculate an acceptance rate, divide the total number of applicants by the total number of acceptances, then multiply by 100.

Acceptance Rate Definition

An acceptance rate is a ratio or percentage of applicants that get accepted into a program. Generally, this term is used for college admission, but it can be used for jobs and other memberships as well.

How to calculate an acceptance rate?

Example Problem #1:

First, determine the total number of applicants. For this example, we are looking at a large college based in the united states. The total number of applicants, in this case, was found to be 250,000.

Next, determine the total number of individuals that were accepted. Being the prestigious school that it is, this college only accepted 5,000 students.

Finally, calculate the acceptance rate using the formula above:

AR = 5,000/250000*100

= 2%

Example Problem #2:

In this next example, we are looking at a smaller school that only had 40,000 applicants. Of those 40,000 applicants, only 1,000 were accepted.

Using the same formula above we find the acceptance rate to be:

AR = 1000/40000 *100

= 2.5%
