BET Surface Area Formula

The following two example problems outline the steps and information needed to calculate the BET Surface Area.

BET = M * AM

  • #M is the amount of molecules in the monolayer 
  • AM is the space occupied by one molecule 

To calculate the BET surface area, multiply the amount of molecules in the monolayer by the space occupied by one molecule.

How to Calculate BET Surface Area?

The following example problems outline how to calculate BET Surface Area.

Example Problem #1:

  1. First, determine the amount of molecules in the monolayer.
    • The amount of molecules in the monolayer is given as: 100.
  2. Next, determine the space occupied by one molecule.
    • The space occupied by one molecule is provided as: 1.5.
  3. Finally, calculate the BET Surface Area using the equation above: 

BET = #M * AM

The values provided above are inserted into the equation below and computed.

BET =100 *1.5 = 150.00

Example Problem #2: 

For this problem, the variables required are provided below:

amount of molecules in the monolayer = 600

space occupied by one molecule = 23
