The following equation is used to calculate a buoyant force acting on an object.

## Buoyant Force Definition

A buoyant force, or buoyancy for short, is a term used to describe the force acting on an object submerged in a fluid body. This force occurs because of the differential in density between the object itself and the fluid.

For example, a steel ball has a very high density. As a result, its differential is negative and will sink if placed in water. A ball of air has a much smaller density and so the differential is positive and would force the ball to float or act against gravity due to its buoyancy.
