Enter the filament mass  (g), the density (g/cm^3), and the cross-sectional area (cm^2) into the Filament Length Calculator. The calculator will evaluate the Filament Length.

Filament Length Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the Filament Length.

FL = M / D / A
  • Where FL is the Filament Length (cm)
  • M is the filament mass (g)
  • D is the density (g/cm^3)
  • A is the cross-sectional area (cm^2)

To calculate the filament length, divide the filament mass by the density and cross-sectional area.

How to Calculate Filament Length?

The following two example problems outline the steps and information needed to calculate the Filament Length.

Example Problem #1

  1. First, determine the filament mass  (g).
    • The filament mass  (g) is calculated to be : 40.
  2. Next, determine the density (g/cm^3).
    • The density (g/cm^3) is measured to be: 20.
  3. Next, determine the cross-sectional area (cm^2).
    • The cross-sectional area (cm^2) is found to be: 2.
  4. Finally, calculate the Filament Length using the formula above:

FL = M / D / A

The values provided above are inserted into the equation below and computed.

FL = 40 / 20 / 2 = 1 (cm)

Example Problem #2

The variables required for this problem are provided below:

filament mass  (g) = 50

density (g/cm^3) = 30

cross-sectional area (cm^2) = 5

Test your knowledge using the equation and check your answer with the calculator.

FL = M / D / A = (cm)
