Enter the total number of knots and the area of fabric (cm^2) into the Knot Density Calculator. The calculator will evaluate and display the Knot Density.

Knot Density Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the Knot Density.

KD = K / AF
  • Where KD is the Knot Density (knots/cm^2)
  • K is the total number of knots
  • AF is the area of fabric (cm^2)

To calculate the knot density, divide the total number of knots by the area of the fabric.

How to Calculate Knot Density?

The following example problems outline how to calculate Knot Density.

Example Problem #1:

  1. First, determine the total number of knots.
    1. The total number of knots is given as: 700.
  2. Next, determine the area of fabric (cm^2).
    1. The area of fabric (cm^2) is provided as: 20.
  3. Finally, calculate the Knot Density using the equation above:

KD = #K / AF

The values given above are inserted into the equation below:

KD = 700 / 20 = 35 (knots/cm^2)

Example Problem #2:

For this problem, the variables needed are provided below:

total number of knots = 1045

area of fabric (cm^2) = 501

This example problem is a test of your knowledge on the subject. Use the calculator above to check your answer.

KD = #K / AF = ?
