Enter the total laser power (W) and the total area of the beam (cm^2) into the Laser Power Density Calculator. The calculator will evaluate and display the Laser Power Density.

Laser Power Density Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the Laser Power Density.

LPD = LP / A
  • Where LPD is the Laser Power Density (W/m^2)
  • LP is the total laser power (W)
  • A is the total area of the beam (cm^2)

To calculate the laser power density, divide the laser power by the area of the beam.

How to Calculate Laser Power Density?

The following example problems outline how to calculate Laser Power Density.

Example Problem #1:

  1. First, determine the total laser power (W).
    1. The total laser power (W) is given as: 50.
  2. Next, determine the total area of the beam (cm^2).
    1. The total area of the beam (cm^2) is provided as: 10.
  3. Finally, calculate the Laser Power Density using the equation above:

LPD = LP / A

The values given above are inserted into the equation below:

LPD = 50 / 10 = 5 (W/m^2)

Example Problem #2:

For this problem, the variables needed are provided below:

total laser power (W) = 502

total area of the beam (cm^2) = 250

This example problem is a test of your knowledge on the subject. Use the calculator above to check your answer.

LPD = LP / A = ?
