Enter the length and width of the area to be covered in pine into the calculator to determine the total bales of pine straw needed.

Pine Straw Formula

The following formula is used to calculate how many bales of pine straw are needed to cover an area.

BPS = L * W / 37.5
  • Where BPS is the number of bales of pine straw
  • L is the length of the area to be covered (ft)
  • W is the width of the area to be covered (ft)

To calculate the pine straw needed, multiply the length and width of the area, then divide by 37.5

This formula assumes a standard 2-3 inches of depth of pine straw. If you are going to be covering the area in 5-6inches of pines straw, double the result from the formula above:

What is pine straw?

Definition:

Pine straw is the thick needles that drop from pine trees. These needles are often used to cover areas to make a comfortable and insulated area.

How to calculate the number of pine straw bales needed to cover an area?

Example:

The following example problem outlines the steps and information needed to calculate the number of bales of pine straw required to cover an area.

First, determine the length of the area that will be covered. For this example, this is measured to be 10 feet.

Next, determine the width of the area to be covered. this is measured to be 6 feet.

Finally, calculate the number of pine straw bales needed using the formula above:

BPS = L * W / 37.5

BPS = 10 * 6/ 37.5

BPS = 1.6 bales
