Enter the numerator (X) and the denominator (Y) into the Simplified Ratio Calculator. The calculator will evaluate and display the Simplified Ratio.

Simplified Ratio Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the Simplified Ratio.

SR = (X/GSD(X,Y)) / (Y/GSD(X,Y))
  • Where SR is the Simplified Ratio (X:Y)
  • X is the numerator (X)
  • Y is the denominator (Y)

To calculate the simplified ratio, divide the X and Y by the greatest common denominator of X and Y.

How to Calculate Simplified Ratio?

The following example problems outline how to calculate the Simplified Ratio.

Example Problem #1:

  1. First, determine the numerator (X).
    • The numerator (X) is given as: 120.
  2. Next, determine the denominator (Y).
    • The denominator (Y) is provided as: 100.
  3. Finally, calculate the Simplified Ratio using the equation above:

SR = (X/GSD(X,Y)) / (Y/GSD(X,Y))

The values given above are inserted into the equation below and the solution is calculated:

SR = (120/GSD(X,Y)) / (100/GSD(X,Y)) = 6:5 (X:Y)

Example Problem #2:

For this problem, the variables required are provided below:

numerator (X) = 180

denominator (Y) = 60

Test your knowledge using the equation and check your answer with the calculator above.

SR = (X/GSD(X,Y)) / (Y/GSD(X,Y)) = ?
