Surface Energy Formula

The following equation is used to calculate the Surface Energy. 

SE = Fst * dA

Variables:

  • Where SE is the Surface Energy (N*m^2)
  • Fst is the surface tension force (N) 
  • dA is the change in surface area (m^2) 

To calculate the surface energy, divide the surface tension force by the change in surface area.

How to Calculate Surface Energy?

The following two example problems outline the steps and information needed in order to calculate the Surface Energy.

Example Problem #1:

  1. First, determine the surface tension force (N). In this example, the surface tension force (N) is measured to be 5.
  2. Next, determine the change in surface area (m^2). For this problem, the change in surface area (m^2) is calculated to be 4.
  3. Finally, calculate the Surface Energy using the formula above: 

SE = Fst * dA

Inserting the values from above and solving the equation with the imputed values gives: 

SE = 5 * 4 = 20 (N*m^2)


Example Problem #2: 

Using the same process as example problem 1, we first define the needed variables outlined by the formula. In this case, the values are provide as: 

surface tension force (N) = 6

change in surface area (m^2) = 4

Entering these values into the formula or calculator above gives us: 

SE = 6* 4 = 24 (N*m^2)
