Enter the air density (kg/m^3) and the wind speed (m/s) into the Wind Power Density Calculator. The calculator will evaluate and display the Wind Power Density.

Wind Power Density Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the Wind Power Density.

WPD = 1/2 * AD * WS^3
  • Where WPD is the Wind Power Density (Watts/m^2)
  • AD is the air density (kg/m^3)
  • WS is the wind speed (m/s)

To calculate the wind power density, multiply the air density by the wind speed cubed, then divide by 2.

How to Calculate Wind Power Density?

The following example problems outline how to calculate Wind Power Density.

Example Problem #1:

  1. First, determine the air density (kg/m^3).
    1. The air density (kg/m^3) is given as: 1.
  2. Next, determine the wind speed (m/s).
    1. The wind speed (m/s) is provided as: 5.
  3. Finally, calculate the Wind Power Density using the equation above:

WPD = 1/2 * AD * WS^3

The values given above are inserted into the equation below:

WPD = 1/2 * 1 *5^3 = 62.5 (Watts/m^2)

Example Problem #2:

For this problem, the variables needed are provided below:

air density (kg/m^3) = 86

wind speed (m/s) = 74

This example problem is a test of your knowledge on the subject. Use the calculator above to check your answer.

WPD = 1/2 * AD * WS^3 = ?
