Cladding Area Formula
The basic cladding area formula is:
- CA = total cladding area
- BA = area covered by one board
- N = number of boards
If you need to solve for one board’s area instead, use:
If you need to solve for the number of boards, use:
The calculator lets you enter any two values and calculates the missing value. Board area and cladding area can be entered in square feet, square meters, square yards, or square inches. The calculation converts area values to square feet internally, applies the formula, then converts the result back to the unit you selected.
Area Unit Conversions Used for Cladding
These are the area conversions used when board area and cladding area are entered in different units.
| Unit | Equivalent in square feet | Common use |
|---|---|---|
| 1 sq ft | 1 sq ft | Small wall sections, board coverage |
| 1 sq m | 10.7639 sq ft | Metric plans and elevations |
| 1 sq yd | 9 sq ft | Larger surface estimates |
| 1 sq in | 0.00694444 sq ft | Small panel or board dimensions |
Typical Cladding Planning Allowances
The formula gives the direct area. In real projects, you may need extra material for cuts, corners, offcuts, damage, or pattern matching.
| Project condition | Typical extra allowance | What it accounts for |
|---|---|---|
| Simple rectangular wall | 5% | Basic cuts and minor waste |
| Wall with windows or doors | 7% to 10% | Openings, trimming, and layout adjustments |
| Complex layout or angled cuts | 10% to 15% | Extra cutting, corners, and fitting waste |
Cladding Area Examples
Example 1: Calculate total cladding area
You have 40 boards, and each board covers 3.5 sq ft.
The total cladding area is 140 sq ft.
Example 2: Calculate number of boards
You need to cover 180 sq ft, and each board covers 6 sq ft.
You need 30 boards before adding any waste allowance.
Cladding Area Calculator FAQ
What is board area?
Board area is the surface area covered by one cladding board. If a board is rectangular, you can usually find it by multiplying its exposed length by its exposed width. Use the visible coverage, not always the full physical board size, because overlaps or tongue-and-groove joints may reduce the area that each board actually covers.
Should I round the number of boards up?
Yes. If the result is not a whole number, round up to the next full board. For example, 42.3 boards means you need at least 43 boards. You may also want to add a waste allowance for cuts, mistakes, and damaged pieces.
Can I use different units for board area and cladding area?
Yes. You can enter board area and cladding area in different area units. The calculator converts both area values to square feet for the calculation, then converts the answer into the unit selected for the result field.
