Coffee Calorie Formula
The following formula is used to estimate the total dietary Calories (kilocalories, kcal) in a coffee drink from milk, sugar, and any coffee solids that are actually consumed (for example, instant coffee powder or a powdered coffee mix). For brewed/filtered coffee made from grounds, the calories coming from the coffee itself are typically very small (often around ~2 kcal per 8 fl oz / 240 mL), and most calories come from added milk/cream/sugar.
T = (M * c_m) + (S * c_s) + (P * c_p)
Variables:
- T is the total dietary Calories in the drink (kcal)
- M is the amount of milk added (mL)
- cm is the calorie content (energy density) of the milk (kcal/mL)
- S is the amount of sugar added (g)
- cs is the calorie content of the sugar (kcal/g) (table sugar is about 4 kcal/g)
- P is the amount of instant coffee / coffee mix used (g) (only applicable when the coffee solids are consumed)
- cp is the calorie content of the instant coffee / coffee mix (kcal/g)
To calculate the total dietary Calories, multiply the amount of milk added by the milk’s calorie content, add the product of the amount of sugar and the sugar’s calorie content, and (if applicable) add the product of the mass of instant coffee/coffee mix and its calorie content.
What is a Coffee Calorie?
In nutrition, a “Calorie” (with a capital C) is a kilocalorie (kcal). The Calories in a coffee drink come mostly from what you add to it—such as milk, cream, sugar, flavored syrups, or sweetened coffee mixes. Plain brewed black coffee typically contains very few Calories (often around ~2 kcal per 8 fl oz / 240 mL cup). Drinks made with a substantial amount of milk and/or added sugars (for example, lattes and cappuccinos) commonly range from roughly 100–250+ kcal per serving depending on size and ingredients.
How to Calculate Coffee Calorie?
The following steps outline how to calculate the Coffee Calorie using the given formula:
- First, determine the amount of milk added (M) in milliliters (mL).
- Next, determine the calorie content of the milk (cm) in kilocalories per milliliter (kcal/mL).
- Next, determine the amount of sugar added (S) in grams (g).
- Next, determine the calorie content of the sugar (cs) in kilocalories per gram (kcal/g) (about 4 kcal/g for table sugar).
- If using instant coffee powder or a powdered coffee mix (coffee solids consumed), determine the amount used (P) in grams (g).
- Determine the calorie content of the instant coffee / coffee mix (cp) in kilocalories per gram (kcal/g).
- Using the formula T = (M * cm) + (S * cs) + (P * cp), calculate the total dietary Calories (T) in the drink.
Example Problem:
Use the following variables as an example problem to test your knowledge:
Amount of milk added (M) = 50 mL
Calorie content of the milk (cm) = 0.64 kcal/mL
Amount of sugar added (S) = 10 g
Calorie content of the sugar (cs) = 4 kcal/g
Amount of instant coffee powder used (P) = 2 g
Calorie content of the instant coffee powder (cp) = 3.5 kcal/g
Total dietary Calories: T = (50 * 0.64) + (10 * 4) + (2 * 3.5) = 32 + 40 + 7 = 79 kcal
