Deck Mud Formula
The calculator converts the entered length, width, and thickness to inches before applying its formulas. Deck mud volume is handled as cubic yards for the base calculation, then converted to the volume unit you select.
- DM = deck mud volume
- L = length, converted to inches
- W = width, converted to inches
- T = thickness, converted to inches
If you leave the deck mud field blank, the calculator multiplies length, width, and thickness to estimate the volume. If you leave length, width, or thickness blank, it rearranges the calculation to solve for that missing dimension. You must enter exactly three values so there is only one unknown to solve.
Common Deck Mud Planning Values
| Use | Typical thickness | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Shower pre-slope | About 1/4 in slope per foot | Use average thickness if the bed slopes from one side to another. |
| Shower mortar bed | Often 1 in to 2 in or more | Check the installation method and drain height before choosing thickness. |
| Small patch or leveling area | Varies by low spot | Measure several spots and use an average thickness. |
Deck Mud Mix and Waste Guide
| Item | Typical value | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Sand to cement ratio | 4:1 or 5:1 by volume | A 5:1 mix is common for dry-pack deck mud. |
| Extra material allowance | 10% to 15% | Add this after calculating volume to cover waste, low spots, and shaping. |
| Water amount | Enough for a damp, packable mix | Deck mud should hold shape when squeezed, not flow like concrete. |
Example
Example 1: Calculate deck mud volume
Suppose you enter a length of 18 in, a width of 12 in, and a thickness of 1 in. The calculator uses:
The result is:
DM = 0.2963 cubic yards
Example 2: Calculate missing thickness
Suppose you enter a deck mud value of 0.25 cubic yards, a length of 9 in, and a width of 3 in. The calculator uses:
The result is:
T = 0.2500 in
FAQ
How do you calculate deck mud for a sloped shower pan?
For a sloped shower pan, use the average thickness. Add the thickness at the low end and the thickness at the high end, then divide by 2. Enter that average as the thickness. This gives a practical volume estimate for a flat rectangular calculation.
Should you add extra deck mud after calculating the volume?
Yes. Add about 10% to 15% extra material for waste, uneven substrate, packing, screeding, and small measurement errors. It is better to have a small amount left over than to run short during placement.
What deck mud mix ratio should you use?
A common dry-pack deck mud mix is 5 parts sand to 1 part Portland cement by volume. Some jobs use a 4:1 mix. The mix should be damp enough to clump in your hand, but not wet enough to slump or bleed water.
