Enter the surface area and volume of an object into the calculator to determine its form factor. The form factor is a dimensionless value that describes the shape of an object.

Form Factor Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the form factor of an object.

FF = SA / V^{(2/3)}

Variables:

  • FF is the form factor (dimensionless)
  • SA is the surface area of the object (units²)
  • V is the volume of the object (units³)

To calculate the form factor, divide the surface area of the object by the volume raised to the power of two-thirds.

What is a Form Factor?

The form factor is a dimensionless quantity that is used to describe the shape of an object in relation to its surface area and volume. It is particularly useful in fields such as physics and engineering to compare the shapes of different objects or to understand how a particular shape affects an object’s properties, such as heat transfer or fluid dynamics.

How to Calculate Form Factor?

The following steps outline how to calculate the Form Factor.

  1. First, determine the surface area of the object (SA) in square units.
  2. Next, determine the volume of the object (V) in cubic units.
  3. Next, gather the formula from above = FF = SA / V^(2/3).
  4. Finally, calculate the Form Factor (FF).
  5. After inserting the variables and calculating the result, check your answer with the calculator above.

Example Problem :

Use the following variables as an example problem to test your knowledge.

Surface area of the object (SA) = 150 units²

Volume of the object (V) = 50 units³
