Enter your birth year and select your gender to calculate your Kua number. The Kua number is used in Feng Shui to determine your auspicious and inauspicious directions. Note: Many Feng Shui schools base this on the Chinese solar year (often starting around Feb 4), so if you were born in late January or early February you may need to use the previous year.

Kua Number Formula

The Kua number is a traditional Feng Shui value calculated from a person’s birth year and gender. This calculator first reduces the last two digits of the birth year to a single digit, then applies the gender-specific rule for the correct century range.

Step 1: Find the reduced digit sum of the last two digits of the birth year.

S = \text{sum of the last two digits of the birth year, reduced to one digit}
Birth Year Range Male Formula Female Formula
1900–1999
K = 10 - S
K = S + 5
1800–1899 or 2000–2099
K = 9 - S
K = S + 6

After calculating K, reduce it to a single digit if needed. If the result becomes 0, use 9. In many traditional systems, a final Kua number of 5 is reassigned as 2 for males and 8 for females.

Variable Definitions

  • K = final Kua number
  • S = reduced digit sum of the last two digits of the birth year
  • Birth Year = the year used for the calculation
  • Gender = male or female, because the traditional formula differs by gender

How to Calculate a Kua Number

  1. Take the last two digits of the birth year.
  2. Add those two digits together.
  3. If the result has two digits, add those digits again until only one digit remains. That value is S.
  4. Use the correct male or female formula based on the birth year range.
  5. If the answer has two digits, reduce it again to one digit.
  6. If the result is 0, use 9.
  7. If the result is 5, convert it to 2 for males or 8 for females.

Example: Male Born in 1985

Start with the last two digits of the year:

8 + 5 = 13 \rightarrow 1 + 3 = 4

Because 1985 falls in the 1900–1999 range, use the male rule:

K = 10 - 4 = 6

The Kua number is 6.

Example: Female Born in 2003

Reduce the last two digits of the birth year:

0 + 3 = 3

Because 2003 falls in the 2000–2099 range, use the female rule:

K = 3 + 6 = 9

The Kua number is 9.

How the Result Is Typically Used

A Kua number is commonly used in traditional Feng Shui as a quick personal reference for directional analysis. People often use it when evaluating:

  • sleeping direction
  • desk or work orientation
  • preferred facing directions
  • general compatibility with directional Feng Shui methods

This calculator provides the personal number only. It does not analyze room layout, home period, compass school details, or full birth-chart methods.

Important Notes Before Using the Calculator

  • Birth year boundary matters: some Feng Shui traditions use the Chinese solar year rather than January 1 as the year change.
  • January and early February birthdays may need special handling: if you were born before the solar new year, some methods use the previous calendar year.
  • Different schools may vary slightly: the most common reason two calculators disagree is the year-boundary convention, not the arithmetic.
  • Kua number 5 is a special case: it is usually reassigned rather than used directly.

Common Questions

Why do I need gender for this calculation?
The traditional Kua formula uses different arithmetic rules for males and females, so the same birth year can produce different results.

Why does my result change if I switch the year?
If you were born near the start of the year, some methods may treat your Feng Shui birth year as the previous year. That changes the digit sum and the final Kua number.

Why is the number reduced to one digit?
The traditional method uses a single-digit final result from 1 to 9, with the special handling rules for 0 and 5 applied afterward.
