Estimate stone mass from rectangular or round piece dimensions, or known total stone area, with thickness and a selected or custom density. Density presets are illustrative; use supplier data for the actual product.

Density presets are illustrative estimates. Use your supplierโ€™s measured density for lifting, shipping or structural decisions; stone-only mass excludes supports, adhesive and packaging.

Marble Weight Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the Marble Weight.

MW = L ร— W ร— (T / 12) ร— rho

Variables:

  • MW is the Marble Weight (lbs)
  • L is the marble length (ft)
  • W is the marble width (ft)
  • T is the marble thickness (in); rho is the selected density (lb/ftยณ). Multiply by the number of identical pieces for total mass.

To calculate marble mass, multiply area by thickness using consistent units, then by density. The default illustrative marble density is 2,711 kg/mยณ (about 169.24 lb/ftยณ), not 160 lb/ftยณ. Actual stone density varies; the result excludes adhesive, supports and packaging.

How to Calculate Marble Weight?

The following steps outline how to calculate the Marble Weight.

  1. First, determine the marble length (ft).
  2. Next, determine the marble width (ft).
  3. Next, determine the marble thickness (in).
  4. Use MW = L ร— W ร— (T/12) ร— rho with dimensions in feet and inches as labelled and density in lb/ftยณ.
  5. Finally, calculate the Marble Weight.
  6. After inserting the variables and calculating the result, check your answer with the calculator above.

Example Problem:

Use the following variables as an example problem to test your knowledge.

marble length (ft) = 10

marble width (ft) = 10

marble thickness (in) = 3. At an explicitly assumed density of 160 lb/ftยณ, MW = 10 ร— 10 ร— (3/12) ร— 160 = 4,000 lb. Select Custom supplier density and enter 160 lb/ftยณ to reproduce this example; the default density gives a different result.
