Percentage Distance Formula

The percentage distance formula compares a current distance to a total distance. The same relationship can be rearranged to find the missing value.

PD = (CD / TD) * 100
CD = TD * (PD / 100)
TD = CD / (PD / 100)
D_to = (D_from * F_from) / F_to
  • PD = percentage distance
  • CD = current distance, or the distance already covered
  • TD = total distance
  • D_from = distance in the starting unit
  • D_to = distance in the converted unit
  • F_from = conversion factor from the starting unit to meters
  • F_to = conversion factor from meters to the target unit

To find the percentage distance, divide the current distance by the total distance and multiply by 100.

To find the current distance, multiply the total distance by the percentage written as a decimal.

To find the total distance, divide the current distance by the percentage written as a decimal.

For unit conversion, the calculator converts the starting distance to meters first, then converts meters into the selected output unit.

Distance Unit Conversion Factors

Unit Symbol Meters per unit
Meter m 1
Kilometer km 1,000
Mile mi 1,609.344
Yard yd 0.9144
Foot ft 0.3048

Common Percentage Distance Values

Percentage Decimal form Meaning
10% 0.10 One tenth of the total distance
25% 0.25 One quarter of the total distance
50% 0.50 Half of the total distance
75% 0.75 Three quarters of the total distance
100% 1.00 The full total distance

Example Problems

Example 1: Find the current distance

You have a total distance of 26.2 miles and want to find 40% of it.

CD = 26.2 * (40 / 100)
CD = 10.48 mi

The current distance is 10.48 miles.

Example 2: Find the percentage distance

You have gone 750 meters out of a total distance of 3 kilometers.

First use the same unit. Since 3 kilometers is 3,000 meters:

PD = (750 / 3000) * 100
PD = 25%

The current distance is 25% of the total distance.

FAQs

Can the percentage distance be more than 100%?

Yes. A result over 100% means the current distance is greater than the total distance entered. For example, 12 miles compared with a 10 mile total is 120%.

Do the current distance and total distance need to use the same unit?

No. You can enter different units, such as meters for current distance and kilometers for total distance. The calculation converts them to a common base unit before finding the percentage.

Why can’t total distance be zero when finding a percentage?

The percentage formula divides by total distance. Division by zero is not valid, so the total distance must be greater than zero when finding percentage distance.
