Enter the area, depth, and weight per square foot of the polymeric sand into the calculator to determine the amount of polymeric sand needed for the project.

Polymeric Sand Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the amount of polymeric sand needed for a project:

PS = (A * D * W) / 100

Variables:

  • PS is the amount of polymeric sand needed (in pounds)
  • A is the area to be covered (in square feet)
  • D is the depth of the sand layer (in inches)
  • W is the weight per square foot of the polymeric sand (in pounds)

To calculate the amount of polymeric sand needed, multiply the area to be covered by the depth of the sand layer, and then multiply the result by the weight per square foot of the polymeric sand. Finally, divide the product by 100 to convert it to pounds.

What is a Polymeric Sand?

Polymeric sand is a unique mixture of fine sands combined with other additives (polymers), that, when mixed with water, form a surprisingly strong binding agent that locks the sand particles together. It is particularly useful for filling the joints between pavers, including concrete pavers, brick pavers, and stone pavers.

The primary function of polymeric sand is to interlock the pavers and to create a seamless, aesthetically pleasing surface. It is resistant to weed growth, insects, and erosion. When set, it becomes very firm and locks between the paver joints while still retaining flexibility and providing a long-lasting, durable jointing material. Polymeric sand is also often used in landscaping projects or to secure and strengthen a loose stone path.
