Enter the prevalence percentages for two different groups into the calculator to determine the prevalence difference between them.

Prevalence Difference Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the prevalence difference between two groups.

PD = P1 - P2

Variables:

  • PD is the prevalence difference (%)
  • P1 is the prevalence in Group 1 (%)
  • P2 is the prevalence in Group 2 (%)

To calculate the prevalence difference, subtract the prevalence percentage of Group 2 from the prevalence percentage of Group 1.

What is Prevalence Difference?

Prevalence difference is a measure used in epidemiology to compare the prevalence of a health-related event, condition, or disease between two groups. It is the absolute difference in prevalence rates and can provide insight into the impact of an intervention or the burden of a health issue within a population. A positive prevalence difference indicates a higher prevalence in Group 1, while a negative value indicates a higher prevalence in Group 2.

How to Calculate Prevalence Difference?

The following steps outline how to calculate the Prevalence Difference.

  1. First, determine the prevalence in Group 1 (P1) as a percentage.
  2. Next, determine the prevalence in Group 2 (P2) as a percentage.
  3. Use the formula from above = PD = P1 – P2.
  4. Finally, calculate the Prevalence Difference (PD) as a percentage.
  5. After inserting the variables and calculating the result, check your answer with the calculator above.

Example Problem :

Use the following variables as an example problem to test your knowledge.

Prevalence in Group 1 (P1) = 15%

Prevalence in Group 2 (P2) = 10%
