Quart Volume Formula
The calculator uses three formulas depending on the mode you pick. Each one ends by dividing cubic inches by the cubic inches in your chosen quart type.
Box mode:
Quarts = (L * W * H) / Q
Cylinder mode:
Quarts = (pi * (D/2)^2 * H) / Q
Convert mode:
Quarts = (V * F) / Q
- L, W, H = length, width, height in inches
- D = diameter in inches
- V = input volume in your selected unit
- F = cubic inches per unit of V
- Q = cubic inches per quart (57.75 US liquid, 67.200625 US dry, 69.3548583234 imperial)
The Box tab multiplies three side lengths after converting each to inches. The Cylinder tab squares the radius and multiplies by height. The Convert tab takes a known volume in any common unit and restates it as quarts. In every mode, the quart-type dropdown sets the divisor Q.

Example Problems
Example 1: Rectangular planter. A planter is 25 in long, 10 in wide, and 12 in deep. Volume in cubic inches is 25 × 10 × 12 = 3,000. In US liquid quarts that is 3,000 / 57.75 = 51.95 qt.
Example 2: Cylindrical tank. A tank has an 8 in diameter and a 20 in height. Radius is 4 in, so volume is π × 16 × 20 = 1,005.31 in³. In US liquid quarts that is 1,005.31 / 57.75 = 17.41 qt.
FAQ
US liquid or US dry quart, which should you use? Use the liquid quart for any fluid, including water, oil, milk, and fuel. Use the dry quart only for loose dry goods sold by US dry measure, such as berries or grain.
Why is the imperial quart larger? The imperial system defines a gallon as about 4.546 liters, while a US gallon is about 3.785 liters. Each system divides its gallon into four quarts, so the imperial quart is roughly 20% larger than the US liquid quart.
Does the calculator account for wall thickness? No. It returns the geometric volume of the shape you enter. For a real container, subtract wall thickness from each dimension before entering values to get usable capacity.
How do you convert quarts back to gallons? Divide quarts by 4 for US gallons or imperial gallons within the same system. The result panel shows US gallons next to your quart total.
