Reverse Age Formula
The calculator runs one of three formulas depending on the mode you pick.
Age → Birth Year
BirthYear = ReferenceYear - Age (if birthday has passed) BirthYear = ReferenceYear - Age - 1 (if birthday has not passed)
Birth Year → Age
Age = CurrentYear - BirthYear (if birthday has passed) Age = CurrentYear - BirthYear - 1 (if birthday has not passed)
DOB → Exact Age
Age = (AsOfDate - DOB) broken into Years, Months, Days
- Age — completed years of life
- BirthYear — calendar year of birth
- ReferenceYear / CurrentYear — the year you are calculating against
- DOB — full date of birth (YYYY-MM-DD)
- AsOfDate — the date the age is measured on (defaults to today)
The simple year subtraction can be off by one because it ignores the month and day. The “birthday passed” flag corrects for that. The DOB mode skips the ambiguity entirely by using full dates.

Worked Examples
Example 1 — Age to birth year. Someone is 35 in 2025. If their birthday has already passed, they were born in 2025 – 35 = 1990. If not, 2025 – 35 – 1 = 1989.
Example 2 — Birth year to age. Born in 1990, calculating in 2025. Birthday passed: age 35. Birthday not yet: age 34.
Example 3 — DOB to exact age. DOB 1990-08-15, as-of 2025-03-10. The as-of date is before August 15, so subtract one year. Result: 34 years, 6 months, 23 days.
FAQ
Why does the result show two birth years? Without a month and day, “age 35” maps to two possible birth years. The earlier one applies before this year’s birthday, the later one after.
Does it handle leap years? Yes. The DOB mode counts actual calendar days, so February 29 births and leap years are reflected in the day total.
Can I calculate age on a future date? Yes, in DOB mode. Set the as-of field to any past or future date.
