Adhesive Coverage Formula
The adhesive coverage calculator uses area and coverage rate to estimate how much adhesive you need.
- Adhesive = amount of adhesive needed, usually shown in gallons
- Area = total project area converted to square feet
- Coverage Rate = how many square feet one gallon covers
For tile and mortar projects, the calculator uses the selected trowel size or tile type as the coverage rate:
For flooring projects, the calculator uses the selected flooring type as the coverage rate:
For a custom product label rate in square feet per gallon, the calculator uses:
For a custom product label rate in square meters per liter, the calculator first converts it to square feet per gallon:
Area is converted to square feet before the adhesive amount is calculated:
- Area_sqft = project area in square feet
- Tile_Coverage_Rate = selected tile or trowel coverage in sq ft/gal
- Flooring_Coverage_Rate = selected flooring adhesive coverage in sq ft/gal
- Custom_Rate_sqft_per_gal = product label coverage rate in sq ft/gal
- Rate_sqm_per_L = product label coverage rate in sq m/L
- 10.7639 = square feet in one square meter
- 0.264172 = gallons in one liter
The tile mode is best when you know the trowel notch size or general tile type. The flooring mode is best for common flooring adhesives such as vinyl, carpet, wood, rubber, or cork. The custom rate mode is best when your adhesive container lists its own coverage rate.
Typical Adhesive Coverage Rates
| Application | Selection | Coverage rate |
|---|---|---|
| Tile / mortar | V-notch, mosaic or backsplash | 110 sq ft/gal |
| Tile / mortar | ¼" x ¼" square notch, small tile | 95 sq ft/gal |
| Tile / mortar | ½" x ½" square notch, large tile | 55 sq ft/gal |
| Flooring | Luxury vinyl plank | 150 sq ft/gal |
| Flooring | Engineered wood | 200 sq ft/gal |
Area and Container Conversions
| Unit | Conversion used |
|---|---|
| 1 sq ft | 1 sq ft |
| 1 sq m | 10.7639 sq ft |
| 1 sq yd | 9 sq ft |
| 1 gallon | 3.78541 liters |
| 1 gallon | 4 quarts |
Example Adhesive Coverage Calculations
Example 1: Tile mortar for a 120 sq ft room
You are setting mid-size tile over 120 sq ft using a ¼" x ⅜" square-notch trowel. The calculator uses a coverage rate of 75 sq ft/gal.
You need about 1.60 gallons of adhesive or mortar. In practice, you would usually buy 2 one-gallon containers or a larger pail if available.
Example 2: Flooring adhesive for 300 sq ft of LVP
You are installing luxury vinyl plank over 300 sq ft. The calculator uses a coverage rate of 150 sq ft/gal.
You need about 2.00 gallons of adhesive.
FAQ
Should you add extra adhesive for waste?
Yes. The calculated amount is based on the coverage rate and area only. It is usually smart to add about 10% for uneven surfaces, notched trowel variation, cuts, cleanup, and small application losses. For large-format tile, rough subfloors, or porous surfaces, you may need more than the basic estimate.
Why does trowel size change adhesive coverage?
A larger notch leaves more adhesive on the surface. That means one gallon covers fewer square feet. Small tile or mosaic work often uses a smaller notch and gets higher coverage. Large tile usually needs a deeper bed of mortar or adhesive, so the coverage rate is lower.
Should you use the calculator result or the product label?
Use the product label whenever it gives a specific coverage rate for your material, trowel, and surface. Adhesive coverage can vary by brand, product type, substrate, and application method. The custom rate option is best when the container gives a rate that matches your installation.
