Aquafit Calories Burned Formula

The calculator uses the standard MET (metabolic equivalent) energy expenditure equation. Body weight in pounds is converted to kilograms before the calculation.

Calories = MET × 3.5 × weight(kg) ÷ 200 × minutes

In “Time for goal” mode, the same formula is solved for minutes:

Minutes = Calories ÷ (MET × 3.5 × weight(kg) ÷ 200)
  • Calories – energy burned in kilocalories (kcal)
  • MET – intensity multiplier for the activity (4.0, 5.5, or 7.0 here)
  • weight(kg) – body weight in kilograms (lb ÷ 2.2046)
  • minutes – workout duration in minutes (hr × 60)
  • 3.5 – resting oxygen uptake in mL/kg/min
  • 200 – conversion constant from oxygen use to kcal/min

The Calories burned tab takes your weight, duration, and effort level and returns total kcal plus an hourly burn rate. The Time for goal tab takes a calorie target and returns the minutes of Aquafit needed at the selected effort. Both tabs accept lb or kg for weight and convert automatically.

Typical Aquafit Intensity and Burn Rates

The MET options in the calculator come from published values for water aerobics. Use the table below to pick the effort level that matches your class.

Effort MET What it feels like
Light water aerobics 4.0 Gentle pace, can talk easily, low impact
Moderate Aquafit class 5.5 Steady class tempo, breathing harder, short sentences
Vigorous Aquafit class 7.0 Fast intervals, dumbbells or noodles, high heart rate

Estimated calories burned in a 45-minute moderate (5.5 MET) Aquafit class:

Body weight kcal in 45 min kcal/hour
125 lb (57 kg)220293
155 lb (70 kg)271361
185 lb (84 kg)324432
220 lb (100 kg)385514
250 lb (113 kg)437583

Example Problems

Example 1. You weigh 155 lb and take a 45-minute moderate Aquafit class (5.5 MET). Convert weight: 155 ÷ 2.2046 = 70.3 kg. Then 5.5 × 3.5 × 70.3 ÷ 200 × 45 = about 271 kcal.

Example 2. You want to burn 400 kcal at vigorous effort (7.0 MET) and weigh 180 lb (81.6 kg). Calories per minute: 7.0 × 3.5 × 81.6 ÷ 200 = 10.0. Time needed: 400 ÷ 10.0 = 40 minutes.

FAQ

Why are MET-based numbers only estimates? The MET equation assumes an average resting metabolism. Your actual burn varies with fitness, age, water temperature, and how hard you push during class.

Do I burn more in cold water? Slightly. Cooler pools raise energy use to maintain body temperature, but most indoor Aquafit pools are warm enough that the effect is small.

Is Aquafit good for weight loss? It can be. A moderate class three times per week burns roughly 800 to 1,200 kcal weekly for most adults. Weight loss still depends on overall calorie balance.

Should I use my weight in lb or kg? Either works. The calculator converts pounds to kilograms before applying the formula, so the result is the same.
