Average Daily Sales (ADS) Formula
The basic average daily sales formula divides total sales over a period by the number of days in that period.
To solve for total sales, rearrange the formula:
To solve for the number of days, rearrange the formula:
- ADS = Average daily sales, usually shown as dollars per day
- TS = Total sales over the full period
- D = Number of days in the period
The calculator uses these formulas depending on which field you leave blank. If you enter total sales and number of days, it calculates average daily sales. If you enter average daily sales and number of days, it calculates total sales. If you enter total sales and average daily sales, it calculates the number of days represented by those sales.
Common Sales Periods for ADS Calculations
Use the same period for both total sales and number of days. If the sales total covers a full month, the day count should be the number of calendar days in that month unless you are intentionally using business days only.
| Period | Typical Day Count | Example Use |
|---|---|---|
| 1 week | 7 days | Short-term sales tracking |
| 30-day period | 30 days | Rolling monthly performance |
| Quarter | 90 to 92 days | Quarterly sales averages |
| Year | 365 days, or 366 in a leap year | Annual sales run rate |
How to Interpret Average Daily Sales
| ADS Result | Meaning | Possible Use |
|---|---|---|
| Higher than prior period | Sales pace increased | Check which products, channels, or promotions drove the increase |
| Lower than prior period | Sales pace decreased | Review traffic, conversion rate, pricing, or seasonality |
| Steady across periods | Sales pace is consistent | Use it for forecasting inventory, staffing, or revenue |
Example
Example 1: Calculate average daily sales
You had total sales of $18,600 over 30 days.
Your average daily sales are $620 per day.
Example 2: Calculate total sales from ADS
Your average daily sales are $750 per day over 14 days.
Your total sales for the period are $10,500.
FAQ
What is average daily sales?
Average daily sales is the average amount of sales generated per day over a chosen period. For example, if a store makes $7,000 in sales over 7 days, its average daily sales are $1,000 per day.
Should I use calendar days or business days?
Use the day count that matches your purpose. Use calendar days if you want the average sales pace across the full period. Use business days if sales only occur on operating days or if you want to compare performance across open days only.
Can average daily sales be used for forecasting?
Yes. You can multiply average daily sales by a future number of days to estimate future sales. For example, if ADS is $500 and you want a 30-day estimate, the forecast is $500 × 30 = $15,000. This is a simple estimate and does not account for seasonality, promotions, or changes in demand.
