Away Goal Rule Formula
The away goal rule compares the total goals over two matches first. If the aggregate score is tied, the team with more away goals wins.
Team 1 Aggregate = h1 + a2
Team 2 Aggregate = a1 + h2
Away Goal Difference = a2 - a1
- h1 = goals scored by the home team in the first match
- a1 = goals scored by the away team in the first match
- h2 = goals scored by the home team in the second match
- a2 = goals scored by the away team in the second match
- Team 1 = the team that was home in the first match
- Team 2 = the team that was away in the first match
The calculator first adds each team’s goals across both legs. If one team has a higher aggregate score, that team wins on aggregate.
If the aggregate score is tied, the calculator compares away goals. Team 1’s away goals are a2, because Team 1 is away in the second match. Team 2’s away goals are a1, because Team 2 is away in the first match.
If both aggregate goals and away goals are tied, the calculator returns a tie after aggregate and away goals. In real competitions, that situation is usually settled by extra time, penalties, or another competition-specific rule.

Score Input Reference
| Calculator Field | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| h1 | Home team’s goals in the first match | Leg 1: Team A 2-1 Team B, so h1 = 2 |
| a1 | Away team’s goals in the first match | Leg 1: Team A 2-1 Team B, so a1 = 1 |
| h2 | Home team’s goals in the second match | Leg 2: Team B 1-0 Team A, so h2 = 1 |
| a2 | Away team’s goals in the second match | Leg 2: Team B 1-0 Team A, so a2 = 0 |
Example Problems
Example 1: Winner on away goals
First match: Team A is home and beats Team B 2-1. Second match: Team B is home and beats Team A 1-0.
- h1 = 2
- a1 = 1
- h2 = 1
- a2 = 0
Team 1 aggregate = 2 + 0 = 2. Team 2 aggregate = 1 + 1 = 2. The aggregate is tied.
Team 1 away goals = 0. Team 2 away goals = 1. Team 2 wins on away goals, so the result is First-match away team wins on away goals.
Example 2: Winner on aggregate
First match: Team A is home and wins 3-1. Second match: Team B is home and wins 2-1.
- h1 = 3
- a1 = 1
- h2 = 2
- a2 = 1
Team 1 aggregate = 3 + 1 = 4. Team 2 aggregate = 1 + 2 = 3.
Team 1 has the higher aggregate score, so the result is First-match home team wins on aggregate.
FAQ
What is the away goal rule?
The away goal rule is a tiebreaker used in some two-leg football matches. If the total score over both matches is tied, the team that scored more goals away from home wins the tie.
Does the away goal rule always apply?
No. Many competitions have removed or changed the away goal rule. This calculator applies the traditional away-goals rule. You should check the rules of the specific competition if you need an official result.
What happens if both teams have the same aggregate score and the same number of away goals?
The tie is still level. Depending on the competition, the next step may be extra time, penalties, or another rule. The calculator does not choose a winner in that case because the correct decision depends on the competition rules.
