Enter the file size in megabytes and the time it takes to transfer the file in seconds into the calculator to determine the bits per second transfer rate.

Bits Per Second Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the bits per second (bps) transfer rate.

BPS = (FS * 8 * 1024 * 1024) / T

Variables:

  • BPS is the bits per second transfer rate
  • FS is the file size in megabytes (MB)
  • T is the time in seconds (s) it takes to transfer the file

To calculate the bits per second transfer rate, multiply the file size in megabytes by 8 (to convert to megabits), then by 1024 twice (to convert to bits), and divide by the time in seconds.

What is Bits Per Second?

Bits per second (bps) is a unit of data transfer rate that represents the number of bits transferred in one second. It is commonly used to measure the speed of internet connections, network throughput, and the performance of data transmission systems. Higher bps rates indicate faster data transfer speeds.

How to Calculate Bits Per Second?

The following steps outline how to calculate the Bits Per Second transfer rate.

  1. First, determine the file size (FS) in megabytes.
  2. Next, determine the time (T) in seconds it takes to transfer the file.
  3. Next, gather the formula from above = BPS = (FS * 8 * 1024 * 1024) / T.
  4. Finally, calculate the Bits Per Second (BPS) transfer rate.
  5. After inserting the variables and calculating the result, check your answer with the calculator above.

Example Problem :

Use the following variables as an example problem to test your knowledge.

File size (FS) = 50 megabytes

Time (T) = 120 seconds
