Bullet Cost Formula

The following formula estimates component cost per complete round.

TC = BP / BQ + PP / PQ + WP × G / 7000 + BC / U

Variables:

  • TC is component cost per complete round ($)
  • BP and BQ are bullet package price ($) and bullet count
  • PP and PQ are primer package price ($) and primer count
  • WP is powder price per pound ($); G is recorded powder use in grains; BC is case cost ($); U is allocated uses per case

Add bullet and primer unit costs, powder cost allocated from the recorded grains per round, and case cost divided by allocated uses. Factory unit cost is box price divided by rounds in the box. One pound contains 7,000 grains.

What is Bullet Cost?

Here, cost per round compares entered component costs with factory box prices. The component estimate excludes equipment, labor, taxes, shipping and waste unless those costs are included in the prices entered. It does not assess ammunition compatibility, performance or safety.

How to Calculate Bullet Cost?

The following steps outline how to calculate the Bullet Cost.

  1. First, choose component cost, factory box cost, or comparison.
  2. For component cost, enter the package prices and quantities for bullets and primers.
  3. Enter powder price per pound and an already established consumption figure for accounting; optionally enter case cost and allocated uses.
  4. For factory cost or comparison, enter box price and round count.
  5. Finally, select Calculate to see cost per round and totals per 50 and 100 rounds.
  6. After inserting the variables and calculating the result, check your answer with the calculator above.
