About the Bottle Return Calculator: Cans, Plastic & Glass
Use this tool to estimate the cash refund value of returnable beverage containers. It helps shoppers, households, fundraisers, and anyone sorting cans, plastic containers, or glass bottles before visiting a redemption center.
How to use this calculator
- Choose Single Rate if all containers have the same deposit value, or Cans, Plastic & Glass for separate material counts.
- Select a deposit preset if it matches your program, or enter custom refund rates in dollars per container.
- Enter the number of containers, cans, plastic containers, and/or glass bottles as whole numbers.
- Click Calculate Refund to see the total refund, total containers, average refund, largest category, and breakdown table.
- Click Reset to restore the default mixed-container example values.
How it works
The calculator multiplies each container count by its entered refund rate. In Single Rate mode, it uses one count and one rate, so total refund equals number of containers times refund rate.
In Cans, Plastic & Glass mode, it calculates cans, plastic, and glass separately, then adds the three refund amounts together. It also reports the total number of containers, the average refund per container, and the category with the largest refund value.
Counts must be whole numbers and cannot be negative. Rates can be any nonnegative dollar amount you enter. Refund programs vary by location, container size, material, and eligibility, so results are educational estimates and not financial or legal advice.
Example calculation
Using the default mixed setup: 24 cans at $0.10 each give $2.40, 18 plastic containers at $0.10 each give $1.80, and 12 glass bottles at $0.05 each give $0.60. The estimated total refund is $4.80 for 54 containers, with an average refund of about $0.09 per container, and cans are the largest category by refund value.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know what refund rate to enter?
Use the deposit value printed on the container or listed by your local bottle return program. Common rates include $0.05, $0.10, and $0.25 per eligible container.
Can I use one rate for all container types?
Yes. Select Single Rate and enter the total number of containers plus the shared refund rate.
Why does the calculator require whole numbers for container counts?
Containers are counted as individual items, so the calculator only accepts whole-number counts for cans, plastic containers, and glass bottles.
Does this calculator verify whether my containers are eligible?
No. It only uses the counts and rates you enter and does not check local rules, brands, sizes, or redemption limits.
What does average refund mean?
Average refund is the total estimated refund divided by the total number of containers, showing the blended value per container.
