About the Cat Litter Calculator
This tool estimates the pounds of cat litter to keep on hand for a chosen number of days. It is useful for cat owners planning monthly supplies, comparing litter types, or estimating how many bags and how much cost to expect.
How to use this calculator
- Enter the number of cats using the litter supply.
- Choose the litter type and estimate period in days.
- Enter the number of litter boxes, average litter depth, and full replacement frequency.
- Select the scooping or top-off level that best matches your routine.
- Enter the bag or box size and price per bag, then click Estimate Litter Needs.
- Use Reset to return to the default one-cat clumping clay example.
How it works
The calculator combines two sources of litter use: daily waste/top-off needs and full box refills. Daily use starts with a per-cat rate based on litter type, then multiplies by the number of cats, number of days, and the selected scooping waste factor.
Full refills are estimated from the number of boxes, the entered litter depth, and how often the boxes are emptied and refilled. The calculator assumes an average box footprint of 18 by 14 inches and a clay-style density of 0.036 pounds per cubic inch, then applies a refill adjustment for lighter litter types such as crystal or natural litter.
Total pounds equals daily top-off use plus refill use for the estimate period. Bag count is rounded up to the next whole bag, and estimated cost equals whole bags needed times the entered price per bag.
The suggested box result compares your entered litter box count with the common guideline of one box per cat plus one extra. Results are planning estimates only; actual use can vary with cat size, box dimensions, humidity, litter brand, and cleaning habits.
Example calculation
For 1 cat using clumping clay over 30 days, with 2 boxes, 3 inches of litter depth, full replacement every 28 days, typical daily scooping, 20 lb bags, and a price of $16.99 per bag: daily top-off is 0.50 lb per day, or 15 lb over 30 days. Each full refill is about 27.22 lb per box, and 2 boxes changed over 30/28 cycles use about 58.33 lb. Total estimated need is about 73.3 lb, so the calculator rounds up to 4 bags of 20 lb, for an estimated cost of $67.96.
Frequently asked questions
How many pounds of cat litter does one cat use per month?
With the default clumping clay settings, one cat with two boxes uses about 73 lb per 30 days because the estimate includes both daily top-offs and full box refills. Changing less often, using fewer boxes, or using a lighter litter type can change the result.
Why does the calculator round up the number of bags?
Litter is normally purchased in whole bags or boxes, so the calculator divides total pounds by bag size and rounds up to ensure you have enough.
What does the scooping level change?
The scooping level adjusts the daily waste and top-off portion. Less efficient or less frequent scooping increases the estimated amount of litter used.
How many litter boxes should I have?
The calculator uses the common guideline of cats plus one box. For example, 2 cats would suggest 3 boxes.
Is crystal litter calculated the same as clay litter?
No. Crystal litter uses a lower daily use rate and a lower refill factor, reflecting that it is typically lighter and consumed differently than clay litter.
