About the Dog Food Calculator
This tool estimates how much food to feed a dog per day based on weight, life stage or goal, body condition, food calories, meal frequency, and treat allowance. It is useful for owners comparing label feeding amounts, planning portions by cup or gram, or adjusting meals as a dog’s needs change.
How to use this calculator
- Enter your dog’s weight and choose lb or kg.
- Select the life stage or feeding goal that best matches your dog.
- Choose the body condition adjustment: under ideal, ideal, or over ideal.
- Enter the food energy in kcal per cup, the grams per cup, meals per day, and treat allowance percentage.
- Click Calculate Food Amount to see daily calories, cups per day, grams per day, and per-meal serving.
- Use Reset to return the calculator to its default values.
How it works
The calculator first converts the dog’s weight to kilograms if needed, then estimates resting energy requirement using RER = 70 × body weight in kg^0.75. RER is the baseline calorie estimate before activity, growth, weight goals, or body condition are considered.
It multiplies RER by the selected life-stage or goal multiplier, then applies the body condition adjustment. For example, an under-ideal dog receives a 10% increase, an ideal dog has no adjustment, and an over-ideal dog receives a 10% reduction.
The selected treat percentage is reserved from the total daily calories, and the remaining calories are assigned to regular food. Cups per day are calculated by dividing food calories by kcal per cup, grams per day are calculated from grams per cup, and per-meal portions are divided by the number of meals per day.
Results are educational estimates, not veterinary advice. Puppies, pregnant or lactating dogs, dogs with medical conditions, and dogs on prescription diets should follow a veterinarian’s feeding plan.
Example calculation
For a 30 lb neutered adult dog at ideal body condition eating food with 400 kcal per cup and 110 g per cup, fed 2 meals per day with 10% of calories reserved for treats: 30 lb is about 13.6 kg, giving an RER of about 496 kcal. Multiplying by the neutered adult factor of 1.6 gives about 793 kcal/day. Reserving 10% for treats leaves about 714 kcal from food, which is 714 ÷ 400 = 1.78 cups/day, or about 196 g/day. Split into 2 meals, that is about 0.89 cups, or 98 g, per meal.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use my dog’s current weight or ideal weight?
Use current weight for maintenance. For weight loss planning, use a target or ideal weight and consult your veterinarian before making large calorie cuts.
Where do I find kcal per cup?
Look on the dog food label for metabolizable energy, often listed as kcal/cup, kcal/can, or kcal/kg. Use the value that matches how you measure the food.
Why does the calculator subtract treat calories?
Treats count toward the dog’s total daily calories. Reserving a treat allowance helps prevent overfeeding while keeping the main food portion accurate.
How often should I adjust the feeding amount?
Recheck weight and body condition every 2 to 4 weeks. If your dog is gaining or losing unexpectedly, adjust portions gradually or ask your veterinarian.
Is measuring by grams better than cups?
Weighing food in grams is usually more precise because cup measurements can vary with kibble size, scoop shape, and how the cup is filled.
