About the km/L to MPG Converter
This tool converts a fuel economy value entered in kilometers per liter into equivalent U.S. MPG, Imperial MPG, liters per 100 km, and gallons per 100 miles. It is useful for drivers, shoppers, and travelers comparing fuel economy figures across countries and measurement systems.
How to use this calculator
- Enter the fuel economy value in the Fuel economy field in km/L.
- Use a value greater than 0 for a valid conversion.
- Read the converted U.S. fuel economy in mpg-US.
- Check the Imperial MPG, liters per 100 km, and gallons per 100 miles results below.
- Change the km/L value to update all results instantly.
How it works
The calculator uses the entered kilometers per liter value as the starting fuel economy. Higher km/L means the vehicle travels farther on each liter of fuel, so it represents better fuel efficiency.
To convert to U.S. miles per gallon, the calculator multiplies km/L by 2.35214583. To convert to Imperial miles per gallon, it multiplies km/L by 2.82480936 because an Imperial gallon is larger than a U.S. gallon.
It also calculates fuel consumption formats. Liters per 100 km is found by dividing 100 by km/L, and gallons per 100 miles is found by dividing 100 by the calculated U.S. MPG. Results are rounded to two decimal places, and values must be greater than zero.
Example calculation
If a car gets 15 km/L, the U.S. MPG is 15 ร 2.35214583 = 35.28 mpg-US. The Imperial MPG is 15 ร 2.82480936 = 42.37 mpg-Imp, liters per 100 km is 100 รท 15 = 6.67 L/100 km, and gallons per 100 miles is 100 รท 35.28 = 2.83 gal/100 mi.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert km/L to U.S. MPG?
Multiply the km/L value by 2.35214583 to get miles per U.S. gallon.
Why is Imperial MPG higher than U.S. MPG?
An Imperial gallon is larger than a U.S. gallon, so the same vehicle will show a higher MPG value when measured in Imperial gallons.
What does L/100 km mean?
Liters per 100 km measures how much fuel is used to travel 100 kilometers. Lower values mean better fuel economy.
What is a typical km/L value for a passenger car?
Many passenger cars fall around 8 to 25 km/L, depending on vehicle size, engine type, driving conditions, and hybrid or electric assistance.
