How it works
The calculator first converts the entered instructional hours to minutes, adds any additional instructional minutes, and then subtracts the entered breaks or other non-CE time. The remaining value is the net CE minutes.
It then divides net CE minutes by 60 because the calculator assumes 1 nursing CE contact hour equals 60 minutes of approved instructional learning time. If a rounding method is selected, the unrounded contact hours are rounded to the chosen increment using nearest, down, or up rounding.
If CEUs are shown, the calculator converts the rounded contact hours to CEUs using the common convention that 1 CEU equals 10 contact hours. Results are educational estimates only and should be verified with the applicable nursing board, employer, accreditor, or CE provider.
Example calculation
Using the default values, enter 4 instructional hours, 30 additional instructional minutes, and 30 minutes of breaks. Total scheduled learning time is 4 × 60 + 30 = 270 minutes; subtracting 30 minutes leaves 240 net CE minutes. Dividing 240 by 60 gives 4.000 contact hours, which rounds to 4.00 contact hours with the nearest 0.1 setting, and equals 0.400 CEUs if CEUs are shown.

Should lunch or breaks count toward contact hours?
Usually no. Meals, breaks, registration, exhibits, networking, and social time are excluded unless the accrediting body specifically allows them.
What is the difference between contact hours and CEUs?
Contact hours measure instructional time directly. CEUs are often converted using 1 CEU = 10 contact hours, so 5 contact hours would equal 0.5 CEUs.
Which rounding method should I use?
Use the rounding rule required by your CE provider, state board, employer, or accreditor. If no rounding is required, choose no rounding.
Why does the calculator reject breaks greater than the activity time?
Breaks and other non-CE time cannot exceed the total scheduled instructional time, because that would produce negative learning minutes.
