About the RPM per Axle Ratio Calculator
This tool estimates cruising engine speed from road speed, axle ratio, transmission gear ratio, and tire diameter. It is useful for comparing rear-end gears, overdrive ratios, or tire size changes before modifying a street, tow, or performance vehicle.
How to use this calculator
- Enter the vehicle speed in mph.
- Enter the axle ratio, such as 3.55, 3.73, or 4.10.

How it works
The calculator uses the common drivetrain estimate: RPM = speed ร axle ratio ร transmission ratio ร 336 รท tire diameter. Speed is entered in miles per hour, tire diameter is entered in inches, and the ratios are unitless gear ratios.
The axle ratio and transmission ratio are multiplied to get the overall drive ratio. A higher axle ratio or transmission ratio raises engine RPM at the same speed, while a larger tire diameter lowers RPM because the tire travels farther per revolution.
The calculator also estimates wheel RPM from tire circumference and vehicle speed, and it reports RPM per 1.00 axle ratio so you can see how much RPM each axle-ratio point contributes. The comparison table recalculates RPM for axle ratios between the selected low and high values.
This is an estimate that assumes no torque-converter slip, clutch slip, or tire growth. Actual cruising RPM can vary slightly due to converter lockup, tire construction, loaded tire diameter, and drivetrain behavior.
Example calculation
Using the default values of 65 mph, a 3.73 axle ratio, a 0.70 transmission ratio, and a 28 inch tire: RPM = 65 ร 3.73 ร 0.70 ร 336 รท 28 = about 2,038 RPM. The overall drive ratio is 3.73 ร 0.70 = 2.61:1, and the wheel speed is about 782 RPM.

What does the 336 constant mean in the RPM formula?
It is a conversion factor that combines miles per hour, inches of tire diameter, and minutes per hour into a convenient drivetrain RPM estimate.
Should I use tire diameter or wheel size?
Use the overall tire diameter in inches, not the rim diameter. For example, many 28 inch tall tires fit wheels much smaller than 28 inches.
Why does a higher axle ratio increase RPM?
A higher numeric axle ratio turns the driveshaft and engine more times for each wheel revolution, which raises engine RPM at the same road speed.
What transmission ratio should I enter for overdrive?
Enter the actual gear ratio for the gear you are cruising in, such as 0.70 for a 30% overdrive or 1.00 for direct drive.
Why might my tachometer show a different RPM?
Real-world RPM can differ because of torque-converter slip, converter lockup status, clutch slip, tire growth, tread wear, or a tire diameter that differs from the advertised size.
