Enter your weight and the distance to estimate your calories per mile and your total calories burned. Use the Basic tab for a quick running estimate, or use the Running (pace) / Walking (pace) tabs for pace-based estimates.
Note: Results are estimates only (dietary “Calories” = kilocalories, kcal) and can vary with terrain, grade, biomechanics, fitness, and device methods. The pace-based tabs use a standard MET approach similar to common MET tables (for example, those published in physical-activity compendiums), and wearables may report “active calories” differently. This tool may save your inputs on your device for convenience—use “Clear saved data” to remove them. If you have a medical condition, are pregnant, under 18, or have a history of eating-disorder risk, consult a qualified clinician before making major diet or exercise changes.
Calories Per Mile Formula
A common rule-of-thumb for running on level ground is that calories per mile are roughly proportional to body weight. (For more detailed estimates, use the Running (pace) or Walking (pace) tabs above.)
Calories per Mile ≈ 0.73 * Weight (lbs) Total Calories ≈ (Calories per Mile) * Distance (miles)
Variables:
- Calories per Mile is the estimated calories burned per mile
- Total Calories is the estimated calories burned over the full distance
- Weight is the weight of the individual in pounds
- Distance is the total distance traveled in miles
To estimate calories per mile, multiply weight (lbs) by 0.73. To estimate total calories, multiply calories per mile by the total distance (miles).
What Does Calories Per Mile Mean?
Calories per mile is an estimate of the energy you expend to move one mile (walking or running). It varies based on factors such as speed, terrain, body mass, and efficiency. Understanding calories per mile can help you compare workouts and plan training and nutrition.
How to Calculate Calories Burned Per Mile?
The following steps outline how to estimate calories per mile (and total calories):
- First, determine your weight in pounds.
- Next, determine the total distance you ran or walked in miles.
- Estimate calories per mile using: Calories per Mile ≈ 0.73 * Weight (lbs).
- Estimate total calories using: Total Calories ≈ (Calories per Mile) * Distance (miles).
- After inserting the variables and calculating the result, check your answer with the calculator above.
Example Problem:
Use the following variables as an example problem to test your knowledge.
Weight = 150 pounds
Distance = 5 miles
Calories per Mile ≈ 0.73 * 150 = 109.50 calories/mile
Total Calories ≈ 109.50 * 5 = 547.50 calories
