Calculate carpet installation cost from room size or a set budget, including carpet, padding, labor, waste, stairs, removal, and sales tax.
Carpet Installation Cost Formula
The calculator works in two directions. To find the total cost for an area you know, it adds the carpet, padding, labor, and any extra fees, then applies tax:
Total = (A * (1 + W) * (Pc + Pp)) + (A * (Pl + Pr)) + F, then add tax: Total * (1 + T)
To find the largest area you can carpet for a fixed budget, it rearranges the same relationship to solve for area:
A = ((B / (1 + T)) - F) / ((1 + W) * (Pc + Pp) + Pl + Pr)
- A = floor area being carpeted, in square feet
- W = waste or overage allowance, as a decimal (for example 10% = 0.10)
- Pc = carpet price per square foot
- Pp = padding price per square foot (0 if you skip new padding)
- Pl = installation labor price per square foot
- Pr = old carpet removal price per square foot
- F = flat fees added once (stairs, furniture moving, disposal, delivery)
- T = sales tax rate, as a decimal
- B = your total budget
Waste is applied only to the material that has to cover the floor in full pieces, so carpet and padding are multiplied by the area plus waste. Labor and removal are charged on the actual floor area, so they use A without waste. Stairs are priced per step and added as a flat amount, as are furniture moving, disposal, and delivery fees. Tax is applied last, to the subtotal of everything else.
Typical Carpet Cost Ranges
Use these figures to fill in the price fields when you do not have a quote yet. All values are per square foot installed unless noted.
| Quality tier | Carpet only | Installed (carpet + pad + labor) |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | $1.00 - $2.00 | $1.80 - $4.10 |
| Mid-range | $2.00 - $4.00 | $3.80 - $7.10 |
| Premium | $4.00 - $7.00 | $6.30 - $10.50 |
| Luxury | $7.00+ | $9.30 - $17.50+ |
Common add-ons charged separately: labor alone runs about $0.50 to $1.50 per square foot ($1.00 to $2.50 in high-cost metros), padding runs $0.75 to $3.75 per square foot, and carpeted stairs add about $15 to $30 per step.
| Extra item | Typical price |
|---|---|
| Carpet padding | $0.75 - $3.75 / sq ft |
| Old carpet removal | $0.25 - $1.00 / sq ft |
| Carpeted stairs | $15 - $30 / step |
| Furniture moving | $25 - $100 flat |
| Haul-away / disposal | $50 - $150 flat |
Example Calculations
Example 1: cost for a room. You are carpeting a 12 ft by 15 ft bedroom, which is 180 square feet. You choose mid-range carpet at $3.00 per square foot, padding at $0.50 per square foot, and labor at $0.75 per square foot, with a 10% waste allowance and no extra fees or tax. Material area is 180 x 1.10 = 198 sq ft. Carpet = 198 x $3.00 = $594. Padding = 198 x $0.50 = $99. Labor = 180 x $0.75 = $135. Total = $594 + $99 + $135 = $828.
Example 2: area for a budget. You have $1,000 to spend and the same prices ($3.00 carpet, $0.50 pad, $0.75 labor, 10% waste, no fees or tax). The combined per-square-foot rate is (1.10 x ($3.00 + $0.50)) + $0.75 = $3.85 + $0.75 = $4.60. Largest area = $1,000 / $4.60 = about 217 square feet, roughly a 14 ft by 15 ft room.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much carpet should I buy for waste? A waste allowance of 5% to 10% is typical for square or rectangular rooms. Rooms with many corners, closets, or angled walls, or carpet with a pattern that has to be matched, can need 15% or more. The waste percentage only increases the carpet and padding you buy, not the labor charge.
Is padding included in carpet installation prices? Not always. Some quotes bundle padding into a single installed price, while others list it separately. If your quote already includes padding, leave the padding option off in the calculator so you do not count it twice. If you are reusing existing padding, you can also skip it.
Why is labor charged on the floor area but carpet on the area plus waste? Installers cut carpet from larger rolls, so you pay for the full pieces needed to cover the room, including the parts that get trimmed off. Labor and removal, on the other hand, depend on the actual floor being worked on, so they are based on the real room area without the waste markup.
