Calculate case equivalents (CE) from kegs, cans, bottles, packs, or total volume to standardize beverage inventory and distribution figures.

Required: number of containers and the volume of each container. A case equivalent is 24 twelve-ounce servings (288 fl oz).

Case Equivalent Formula

A case equivalent (CE) is one standard case of beverage: 24 servings of 12 fluid ounces, or 288 fluid ounces total. To convert any quantity into case equivalents, you find the total volume in fluid ounces and divide by the size of one case.

CE = V / (S * Z)

For the standard case the denominator is 24 x 12 = 288 fluid ounces, so the formula simplifies to:

CE = V / 288

When you start from kegs, first convert keg volume to fluid ounces (1 US gallon = 128 fl oz):

CE = (G * 128) / 288
  • CE = case equivalents (number of standard 24 x 12 oz cases)
  • V = total beverage volume in fluid ounces
  • S = servings per case (24 in a standard case)
  • Z = serving size in fluid ounces (12 in a standard case)
  • G = total keg volume in US gallons

The calculator works in three modes. In containers mode you enter how many cans or bottles you have and the size of each, and it sums the volume before dividing by the case size. In keg mode you pick a keg type, which sets the gallons per keg, and multiply by the number of kegs. In volume mode you enter a single total in gallons, liters, ounces, milliliters, or beer barrels. The advanced option lets you change the servings per case and serving size if your market measures a case differently.

Keg and Package Conversions to Case Equivalents

These are the common container and keg sizes used in beverage distribution and how many case equivalents each one represents under the standard 288 fl oz case.

Example Problems

Example 1. You have 240 cans that each hold 16 fluid ounces. The total volume is 240 x 16 = 3,840 fl oz. Divide by 288 to get 3,840 / 288 = 13.33 case equivalents.

Example 2. You receive one 1/2 barrel keg. Its volume is 15.5 gallons, which is 15.5 x 128 = 1,984 fluid ounces. Divide by 288 to get 1,984 / 288 = 6.89 case equivalents.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a case equivalent?

A case equivalent is a standard unit used by beverage wholesalers and breweries to compare different package sizes. One case equivalent equals 24 servings of 12 fluid ounces, the same volume as a traditional case of 24 twelve-ounce bottles or cans, which is 288 fluid ounces or 2.25 gallons.

Why convert kegs and packs into case equivalents?

Modern beverages ship in many formats: 16 oz cans, 19.2 oz singles, 30 packs, sixtels, half barrels, and 50 liter import kegs. Converting everything to case equivalents puts sales, inventory, and production on one common scale so you can compare brands, track volume, and report depletions in the same language distributors use.

How many case equivalents are in a half barrel keg?

A half barrel holds 15.5 gallons, or 1,984 fluid ounces. Dividing by 288 gives 6.89 case equivalents. A 50 liter keg is 5.87 CE, a quarter barrel is 3.44 CE, and a sixth barrel sixtel is 2.29 CE.
