- A is the net area to cover in square feet, after subtracting openings
- W is the adjustable cutting allowance percentage (initially 10%)
- S is the coverage of one sheet in square feet (15 sq ft for a 3 ft x 5 ft sheet)
- w and l are the sheet width and length in inches
- s is the planning grid interval in inches; the actual fastening pattern is product-specific
The materials modes compute net area from length and width or total area, add the entered cutting allowance, and round up to whole sheets. Fasteners use a full-sheet grid purchasing heuristic with each grid axis rounded separately; tape uses a half-perimeter allowance per sheet. These estimates do not establish an approved installation layout. Floor and countertop modes also estimate bedding bags using the entered coverage, initially an illustrative 45 sq ft per 50 lb bag. Coverage mode divides gross board area by 1 + allowance/100; actual cuts may cover less.
Sheet Sizes, Thickness Selection, and Fastening Specs
Cement backer board comes in a small set of standard sheet sizes. The 3 ft x 5 ft sheet is the default in most stores because it fits through doorways and around tubs.

Example Problems
Example 1: An 8 ft × 10 ft area is 80 sq ft. A 10% allowance gives 88 sq ft, so 88/15 rounds up to 6 sheets of 3 ft × 5 ft board. The calculator’s 8-inch planning grid uses (ceil(36/8) + 1) × (ceil(60/8) + 1) = 54 fasteners per full sheet, or 324 total. This is not a manufacturer fastening plan. Its tape allowance is 48 ft, or one 50 ft roll. At the entered illustrative bedding coverage of 45 sq ft per bag, 80/45 rounds up to 2 bags; tile-setting mortar is additional.
Example 2: You have 10 sheets of 4 ft x 8 ft cement board left over from a previous job and want to know what they can cover. Gross area is 10 * 32 = 320 sq ft. Applying a 10% cutting allowance, 320 / 1.10 = 290.9 sq ft of usable coverage, enough for a square area of roughly 17.1 ft x 17.1 ft.

What thickness of cement backer board should you use? Choose the product thickness approved for the substrate, application, framing and tile assembly. Different products have different permitted thicknesses and spans; floor-height matching is only one consideration.
Do you need thinset under cement backer board? Many floor and countertop systems require a supporting mortar bed beneath the board.
