Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR) Formula
The following formula is used to calculate the feed conversion ratio (FCR) from feed-per-day, weight gain, and days.
FCR = (F \times D) / WG
Variables:
- FCR is the feed conversion ratio (a unitless ratio, often written as lb/lb or kg/kg: feed per unit of gain)
- F is the feed given per day (lb/day or kg/day)
- D is the number of days over which the weight gain is measured (days)
- WG is the total weight gain over the period (lb or kg)
To calculate FCR, multiply the feed given per day by the number of days to get total feed for the period (F × D), then divide by the total weight gain (WG).
What is Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR)?
Feed conversion ratio (FCR) measures how much feed is required to produce a unit of weight gain over a period of time. It is commonly used in poultry production to evaluate feed efficiency: a lower FCR means less feed is needed for the same weight gain.
How to Calculate Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR)?
The following steps outline how to calculate FCR.
- Determine the feed given per day (F) for the bird or group you are measuring.
- Determine the total weight gain over the period (WG).
- Determine the number of days (D) over which the weight gain is measured.
- Use the formula: FCR = (F × D) / WG.
- Calculate FCR as a feed-per-gain ratio (e.g., lb feed per lb gain, or kg feed per kg gain).
- After inserting the variables and calculating the result, check your answer with the calculator above.
Example Problem :
Use the following variables as an example problem to test your knowledge.
Feed given per day (F) = 5 pounds/day
Weight gain (WG) = 2 pounds
Number of days (D) = 7 days
Total feed = F × D = 5 × 7 = 35 lb, so FCR = 35 / 2 = 17.5 lb feed per lb gain.
