Coverage Area Formula
The examples below calculate lot coverage percentage. For material estimates, choose Material units needed or Coverage area from quantity. Units needed = area ร (1 + allowance/100) รท [coverage per unit ร (1 โ overlap/100)]; round up to whole purchasable units. Enter the product coverage rate rather than an assumed rate.
- Where CA is the Coverage Area (%)
- F is the total building footprint (ft^2)
- LA is the total lot area (ft^2)
For coverage percentage, use Ground or plot coverage percentage (the default), divide the total building footprint by the total lot area, and multiply by 100. Both areas must use the same units.
How to Calculate Coverage Area?
The following example problems outline how to calculate Coverage Area.
Example Problem #1:
- First, determine the total building footprint (ft^2).
- The total building footprint (ft^2) is given as 1000.
- Next, determine the total lot area (ft^2).
- The total lot area (ft^2) is provided as 2000.
- Finally, calculate the Coverage Area using the equation above:
CA = F/LA * 100
The values provided above are inserted into the equation below and computed.
CA = 1000/2000 * 100 = 50.00 (%)

For this problem, the variables required are provided below:
total building footprint (ft^2) = 1500
total lot area (ft^2) = 3500
