Crawl Space Vent Formula
The calculator sizes passive foundation vents from your crawl space floor area and the building code ratio. The required net free vent area is:
Av = Af / R
It then converts that area to square inches and divides by the net free area of one vent to get the number of vents:
N = ceil( Av * 144 / NFA )
Variables:
- Av is the required net free vent area, in square feet
- Af is the crawl space floor area (length times width), in square feet
- R is the code ratio: 150 for bare soil, or 1500 when the ground has an approved vapor retarder and the vents provide cross-ventilation
- NFA is the net free area of one vent, in square inches
- N is the number of vents, rounded up to the next whole vent
Floor area drives the whole result: a bigger footprint needs proportionally more open vent area. The ratio R comes straight from IRC R408.1, which sets 1 square foot of net free area for every 150 square feet of floor, or 1 per 1,500 when a ground cover cuts the moisture load. Dividing by the net free area of a single vent, not its stamped size, is what turns the required area into a real vent count.
When you enter a gross vent size instead of a published rating, the calculator finds the net free area of one vent from its opening and the open percentage of its louvers and screen:
NFA = W * H * (P / 100)
W and H are the gross vent width and height in inches, and P is the percent of that opening left clear by the louvers and insect screen. If you switch the top selector to fan mode, the tool sizes a powered vent from the crawl space volume and a target air change rate instead:
CFM = Af * h * ACH / 60
Af is the floor area, h is the average crawl space height in feet, and ACH is the target air changes per hour. The check mode reuses the required area but compares it against the net free area you already have, which is your vent count times the net free area per vent, and then reports whether you pass or how many vents to add.

Example Problems
Example 1: Estimate how many vents a crawl space needs.
A crawl space is 40 ft by 30 ft, so the floor area is 1,200 sq ft. The soil is bare, so you use the 1:150 ratio. Av = 1,200 / 150 = 8 sq ft, which is 8 times 144 = 1,152 sq in. Using automatic vents rated at 57 sq in each, N = 1,152 / 57 = 20.2, rounded up to 21 vents. Split them across opposite walls and keep one within 3 ft of each corner.
Example 2: See how a ground cover changes the count.
Take the same 1,200 sq ft space, add an approved vapor retarder over the soil, and place the vents for cross-ventilation. The ratio drops to 1:1500, so Av = 1,200 / 1,500 = 0.8 sq ft, or about 115 sq in. By area that is only 3 vents of 57 sq in, but the corner rule still wants a vent near each corner, so you would install at least 4.

A vent stamped 8 by 16 inches has a gross opening of 128 square inches, but its rated net free area is often only 50 to 70 square inches. Sizing on the gross number would leave the crawl space under-vented, so the calculator works in net free area and lets you enter either the published rating or a gross size with an open percentage.
