Estimate the rope length needed for a double-strand rappel from the one-way rappel distance plus a margin per strand, or the longest rappel a rope allows.
Scope of This Rope-Length Model
This estimator implements one narrow geometry: a conventional doubled-rope rappel with the rope midpoint at the anchor. Each strand must cover the estimated one-way rope path plus a planning margin selected by the user. The formula is modeled nominal rope length = 2 x (one-way rope path + margin per strand). The reverse mode calculates one-way path = nominal rope length / 2 – margin per strand.
The one-way path is the distance the rope must actually follow, not automatically the vertical height of the cliff. Anchor position, an edge, a diagonal line, ledges, bulges, and the intended landing or next station can make rope path longer than a map or height estimate. No default margin is provided because a universal value would imply knowledge this page does not have.

Nominal Length Is Not Measured Length
A label or old middle mark is not a fresh measurement. Ropes can shrink with use, be shortened after damage, or have inaccurate or obsolete markings. Petzl technical information for semi-static ropes notes substantial possible shrinkage in its product context and instructs users to check rope length regularly. This estimator does not apply an automatic shrinkage percentage because rope construction, product instructions, history, and actual condition must be checked directly.
What the Calculation Omits
The model excludes single-strand blocked rappels, pull cords, joined ropes, multi-stage descents, anchor extensions, knot consumption, joining-knot tails, retrieval behavior, rope elongation, terrain friction, sharp edges, loose rock, water, rescue systems, and device or rope compatibility. It does not teach rigging. Current guidebook or route information, manufacturer instructions, qualified instruction, and an independent partner check remain necessary.
End and Landing Verification
Rappel instruction emphasizes controlling the system and confirming rope ends. A numerical length cannot confirm what is below the anchor. Verify the actual rope, the exact intended line, the anchor, the next station or landing, and both controlled ends using the technique required by current qualified instruction and equipment directions. Do not use the output as a field decision by itself.
