Drywall Screw Formula

S = A * D * (1 + W/100)
  • S is the total number of drywall screws needed
  • A is the area to cover in square feet
  • D is the screw density in screws per square foot (1.0 for walls on 16 in centers, 0.8 for walls on 24 in centers, 1.25 for ceilings on 12 in centers, 1.1 for ceilings on 16 in centers)
  • W is the waste allowance as a percentage, typically 10

To convert the screw count into pounds to buy, the calculator divides by the approximate number of screws per pound for the length you select:

  • P is the pounds of screws to purchase
  • N is the approximate number of screws per pound (about 230 for 1-1/4 in screws)

The calculator applies these formulas in two directions. In the default mode, you enter room dimensions, square footage, or a sheet count, and it returns the total screws, pounds to buy, a suggested box size, and a recommended screw type based on your framing material and drywall thickness. In coverage mode, the formula is reversed: enter the screws or pounds you already have, and it holds back a 10% reserve, divides the rest by the density for your application, and tells you how many square feet and full sheets you can fasten. The densities come from ASTM C840 and GA-216 fastener spacing, which call for screws every 8 inches on wall edges and 12 inches in the field, and every 7 to 12 inches on ceilings.

Screws Per Sheet and Coverage Per Box

The table below shows how many screws each common sheet size takes by application. Ceilings always take more screws than walls of the same area because joists are spaced closer and gravity constantly loads the fasteners.

Screws per pound vary slightly by manufacturer and head style, so treat the coverage numbers as planning figures rather than exact counts.

Example Problems

Example 1: You are hanging drywall on the walls and ceiling of a 12 ft by 12 ft bedroom with 8 ft ceilings, wood studs on 16 inch centers, and joists on 12 inch centers. The wall area is 2 * (12 + 12) * 8 = 384 sq ft, and the ceiling area is 12 * 12 = 144 sq ft. Wall screws are 384 * 1.0 = 384, and ceiling screws are 144 * 1.25 = 180, for a base count of 564. With a 10% waste allowance, S = 564 * 1.10 = 621 screws. At about 230 screws per pound for 1-1/4 in screws, P = 621 / 230 = 2.7 lb, so a single 5 lb box covers the room with plenty to spare.

Example 2: You have a 5 lb box of 1-5/8 in screws left over and want to know how much ceiling you can hang with it. The box holds about 5 * 185 = 925 screws. Holding back 10% leaves 841 usable screws. At the ceiling density of 1.25 screws per sq ft, A = 841 / 1.25 = 672 sq ft, which is 21 full 4 x 8 sheets. Frequently Asked Questions

How many screws go in a 4 x 8 sheet of drywall?

Plan on about 32 screws for a wall sheet on studs 16 inches on center and about 40 for a ceiling sheet on joists 12 inches on center. That follows the ASTM C840 spacing pattern of a screw every 8 inches along wall edges, every 12 inches in the field, and tighter 7 to 12 inch spacing on ceilings. On 24 inch stud spacing there are fewer framing lines behind each sheet, so the count drops to roughly 26 screws per wall sheet.

Can I use fewer screws if I also glue the drywall?

Yes. When you run a bead of drywall adhesive on each stud, GA-216 permits a reduced fastening schedule on walls, roughly half the screws, because the adhesive carries most of the shear load and nearly eliminates screw pops. The perimeter of each sheet must still be fully screwed off, and adhesive is not a substitute for proper fastening on ceilings. If you plan to glue, run the calculator normally and treat the field-screw savings as extra margin rather than cutting your order in half.

What is the difference between coarse and fine thread drywall screws?

Coarse thread (W-type) screws have wide, deep threads that bite into wood framing and are the default for wood studs. Fine thread (S-type) screws have tighter threads with a sharp point that taps into steel studs. The two are not interchangeable: coarse threads strip out in steel, and fine threads hold poorly in wood. Match length to board thickness as well, 1-1/4 in screws for 1/2 in drywall and 1-5/8 in screws for 5/8 in board, so the screw penetrates the framing at least 5/8 in into wood or 1/4 in into steel.
