Education Index Formula
The education index is calculated as the arithmetic average of the mean years of schooling index and the expected years of schooling index. Under UNDP methodology, raw mean years are divided by 15 and expected years by 18, with each component capped at 1.
If you already know the education index and one schooling index, the calculator can rearrange the formula to solve for the missing value.

Education Index Value Guide
The Education Index ranges from 0 to 1. Higher values represent greater normalized schooling attainment and expectation. UNDP’s very high, high, medium and low categories classify the complete HDI, not this education dimension alone.

Example Calculations
Example 1: Calculate the education index
Suppose the mean years of schooling index is 0.7200 and the expected years of schooling index is 0.8400.
The education index is 0.7800.
Example 2: Calculate the missing expected years of schooling index
Suppose the education index is 0.7600 and the mean years of schooling index is 0.7000.
The expected years of schooling index is 0.8200.
FAQ
Is the education index the same as years of schooling?
No. Schooling years are normalized using the 15- and 18-year goalposts before the component indices are averaged. The calculator accepts either normalized indices or raw years in the corresponding mode.
Why do I need to enter exactly two values?
The index formula has three variables: EI, MYSI, and EYSI. Choose the missing value and enter the other two. Raw-years mode instead takes mean and expected years of schooling.
Can the result be outside 0 to 1?
UNDP’s normalized indices are bounded by 0 and 1. This calculator rejects out-of-range inputs and inverse pairs that would require an impossible component. Raw schooling years above the goalposts are capped during normalization.
