Enter the Mean Years of Schooling Index and Expected Years of Schooling Index into the calculator to determine the Education Index. This calculator can also evaluate any of the variables given the others are known.

Education Index Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the Education Index (EI).

EI = (MYSI + EYSI) / 2

Variables:

  • EI is the Education Index
  • MYSI is the Mean Years of Schooling Index
  • EYSI is the Expected Years of Schooling Index

To calculate the Education Index, add the Mean Years of Schooling Index to the Expected Years of Schooling Index. Then, divide the sum by 2.

What is an Education Index?

The Education Index is a tool developed by the United Nations to measure the educational attainment levels of various countries. It is part of the Human Development Index and is calculated using the mean years of schooling for adults aged 25 years and older, and the expected years of schooling for children of school-entry age. The index ranges from 0 to 1, with 1 being the highest possible score, indicating a high level of education in the country.

How to Calculate Education Index?

The following steps outline how to calculate the Education Index (EI).

  1. First, determine the value of the Mean Years of Schooling Index (MYSI).
  2. Next, determine the value of the Expected Years of Schooling Index (EYSI).
  3. Next, use the formula EI = (MYSI + EYSI) / 2 to calculate the Education Index.
  4. Finally, calculate the Education Index using the values of MYSI and EYSI.
  5. After inserting the variables and calculating the result, check your answer with the calculator above.

Example Problem:

Use the following variables as an example problem to test your knowledge.

Mean Years of Schooling Index (MYSI) = 0.85

Expected Years of Schooling Index (EYSI) = 0.92
