Education Index Formula
The education index is calculated as the average of the mean years of schooling index and the expected years of schooling index.
EI = (MYSI + EYSI)/2
If you already know the education index and one schooling index, the calculator can rearrange the formula to solve for the missing value.
MYSI = 2*EI - EYSI
EYSI = 2*EI - MYSI
- EI = Education Index
- MYSI = Mean Years of Schooling Index
- EYSI = Expected Years of Schooling Index
The calculator works when you enter exactly two values and leave the third blank. If you enter MYSI and EYSI, it calculates EI. If you enter EI and EYSI, it calculates MYSI. If you enter EI and MYSI, it calculates EYSI.
Education Index Value Guide
The education index is usually interpreted on a 0 to 1 scale, where higher values indicate stronger education outcomes.
| Education Index Range | General Interpretation |
|---|---|
| 0.800 to 1.000 | Very high education index |
| 0.700 to 0.799 | High education index |
| 0.550 to 0.699 | Medium education index |
| Below 0.550 | Low education index |
Component Values Used in the Calculation
| Input | What It Represents | Typical Scale |
|---|---|---|
| Mean Years of Schooling Index | An indexed measure based on the average years of schooling completed by adults. | Usually 0 to 1 |
| Expected Years of Schooling Index | An indexed measure based on the years of schooling a child is expected to receive. | Usually 0 to 1 |
| Education Index | The average of the two schooling indexes. | Usually 0 to 1 |
Example Calculations
Example 1: Calculate the education index
Suppose the mean years of schooling index is 0.7200 and the expected years of schooling index is 0.8400.
EI = (0.7200 + 0.8400)/2
EI = 0.7800
The education index is 0.7800.
Example 2: Calculate the missing expected years of schooling index
Suppose the education index is 0.7600 and the mean years of schooling index is 0.7000.
EYSI = 2*0.7600 - 0.7000
EYSI = 0.8200
The expected years of schooling index is 0.8200.
FAQ
Is the education index the same as years of schooling?
No. The calculator uses schooling indexes, not raw years. Mean years of schooling and expected years of schooling are first converted into index values. The education index is then found by averaging those two index values.
Why do I need to enter exactly two values?
The formula has three variables: EI, MYSI, and EYSI. If you enter two of them, the missing third value can be calculated. If you enter only one value, there is not enough information. If you enter all three, there is no missing value to solve for.
Can the result be outside 0 to 1?
Mathematically, yes, if the inputs you enter lead to a value below 0 or above 1. In normal education index use, the values are expected to fall between 0 and 1. A result outside that range usually means one of the entered index values should be checked.
