Enter your 1–10 ratings for facial feature symmetry, skin tone evenness, perceived feature “normality” (typicality), facial proportions/harmony, and skin clarity to estimate a simple Facial Attractiveness Index (FAI) score. This is an educational, subjective composite score—not a standardized medical, clinical, or scientific metric.

Facial Attractiveness Index Formula

This calculator uses a simple (user-rated) composite score. If you keep all “Importance” weights set to Normal (1), the score becomes an unweighted average.

FAI = (S·w_S + E·w_E + N·w_N + M·w_M + C·w_C) / (w_S + w_E + w_N + w_M + w_C)

If w_S = w_E = w_N = w_M = w_C = 1, then FAI = (S + E + N + M + C) / 5

Variables:

  • FAI is the Facial Attractiveness Index (a subjective composite score on a 1–10 scale in this calculator)
  • S is the symmetry of facial features (rated 1-10)
  • E is the evenness of skin tone (rated 1-10)
  • N is perceived feature “normality”/typicality (rated 1-10)
  • M is the measure of facial proportions/harmony (rated 1-10)
  • C is the clarity of skin (rated 1-10)
  • wS, wE, wN, wM, and wC are optional importance weights (for example, 0.5 to 2 in the calculator)

To calculate the FAI in this calculator, multiply each rating by its chosen importance weight, add the results, and divide by the sum of the weights. To express the same score “out of 100,” multiply the 1–10 result by 10.

What is a Facial Attractiveness Index?

“Facial attractiveness index” is a generic phrase for any numeric score intended to summarize perceived facial attractiveness. There is no single, universally accepted Facial Attractiveness Index used across research or clinical practice; studies and software tools typically use their own definitions (often based on human ratings, study-specific composites, or model-specific algorithm outputs). The FAI on this page is an educational, user-entered scoring method.

How to Calculate Facial Attractiveness Index?

The following steps outline how to calculate the Facial Attractiveness Index (FAI) used by this calculator.

  1. Determine the symmetry of facial features rating (S) on a 1–10 scale.
  2. Determine the evenness of skin tone rating (E) on a 1–10 scale.
  3. Determine the perceived feature typicality rating (N) on a 1–10 scale.
  4. Determine the facial proportions/harmony rating (M) on a 1–10 scale.
  5. Determine the clarity of skin rating (C) on a 1–10 scale.
  6. (Optional) Choose importance weights wS, wE, wN, wM, and wC (or leave them at 1 for an unweighted average).
  7. Calculate: FAI = (S·wS + E·wE + N·wN + M·wM + C·wC) / (wS + wE + wN + wM + wC).
  8. If desired, multiply the result by 10 to express the score out of 100.
  9. After inserting the variables and calculating the result, check your answer with the calculator above.

Example Problem :

Use the following variables as an example problem to test your knowledge (assume all weights are 1).

Symmetry of facial features (S) rating = 8

Evenness of skin tone (E) rating = 7

Normality of facial features (N) rating = 9

Measure of facial proportions (M) rating = 6

Clarity of skin (C) rating = 8

FAI = (8 + 7 + 9 + 6 + 8) / 5 = 7.6 (≈ 76/100)
