Fuel Price Formula

The following formula calculates total fuel cost, not the price per gallon or liter. To obtain unit price, divide total cost by fuel volume. The calculator also estimates fuel consumption from trip distance and fuel economy.

FP = FN × CF
  • Where FP is total fuel cost ($), not fuel unit price
  • FN is the total amount of fuel needed (gallons) 
  • CF is the cost of fuel ($/gallon)

The following example problems outline how to calculate Fuel Price.

Example Problem #1:

  1. First, determine the total amount of fuel needed (gallons).
    1. The total amount of fuel needed (gallons) is given as 250.
  2. Next, determine the cost of fuel ($/gallon).
    1. The cost of fuel ($/gallon) is provided as 3.00.
  3. Finally, calculate the Fuel Price using the equation above: 

FP = FN * CF

The values given above are inserted into the equation below:

FP = 250 * 3.00 = 750.00 ($)

Example Problem #2: 

For this problem, the variables needed are provided below:

total amount of fuel needed (gallons) = 750

cost of fuel ($/gallon) = 4.00
