Enter the label’s dimensions to calculate its area (or enter the area and one dimension to solve for the other). This calculator also includes a circle option (diameter/radius/area) and a “Fit Count” tool to estimate how many labels fit on a sheet.

Label Size Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the label area (often referred to as “label size”) for a rectangular label:

A = W * H

Variables:

  • A is the area of the label
  • W is the width of the label
  • H is the height of the label
  • Area is expressed in square units (e.g., in², cm²) when W and H are in the corresponding length units

To calculate the label area, multiply the width of the label by the height of the label. If you know the area and one dimension, you can find the other dimension by dividing the area by the known dimension (W = A / H or H = A / W).

What is a Label Size?

Label size refers to the physical dimensions of a label, typically given as width × height (for rectangular labels) or as a diameter (for round labels). Common units include inches, millimeters, and other length units. Choosing the right label size impacts the visibility and readability of the information printed on it and whether it fits properly on the product or package. Label size also affects the overall design and layout of the label, including the size and placement of text, images, and other elements.

How to Calculate Label Size?

The following steps outline how to calculate the label area for a rectangular label.

  1. First, determine the width of the label (W).
  2. Next, determine the height of the label (H).
  3. Next, use the formula from above: A = W × H.
  4. Finally, calculate the label area (A).
  5. After inserting the values for W and H and calculating the result, check your answer with the calculator above.

Example Problem:

Use the following variables as an example problem to test your knowledge.

Width of the label (W) = 5 inches

Height of the label (H) = 3 inches

Label area (A) = W × H = 5 in × 3 in = 15 in²

So the label size is 5 in × 3 in (area 15 in²).
