Calculate the cost to install laminate flooring from your room size, material price, labor rate, and underlayment, or find how much floor a fixed budget will cover.

Laminate Flooring Installation Cost Calculator

Estimate the total cost to install laminate flooring. Choose what to solve for, enter your room size, and set the material, labor, and underlayment prices.

Laminate Flooring Installation Cost Formula

When you know your room size, the total cost is the area plus a waste allowance times the material and underlayment prices, plus labor and removal charged on the bare floor area, plus any fixed fees:

Total = A*(1 + W)*(M + U) + A*(L + R) + F

When you have a fixed budget instead, the calculator rearranges the same relationship to find the floor area you can cover:

A = (B - F) / [ (1 + W)*(M + U) + L + R ]
  • A = floor area in square feet (length x width, or entered directly)
  • W = waste allowance as a decimal (10% = 0.10)
  • M = laminate material price per square foot
  • U = underlayment price per square foot (0 if attached)
  • L = installation labor rate per square foot (0 for DIY)
  • R = old floor removal rate per square foot
  • F = fixed costs such as trim, transition strips, delivery, and misc fees
  • B = your total budget

The waste allowance is applied only to the material you buy, since planks get cut at walls and you want spare boards. Labor and removal are charged on the actual floor area, not the padded amount. Underlayment is bought at the same padded area as the laminate. Fixed costs are added once at the end. In budget mode, those fixed costs are subtracted from your budget first, then the remaining money is divided by the all-in cost of one square foot to give the area you can finish.

Typical Laminate Flooring Prices

Use these 2026 ranges as a starting point, then adjust to local quotes. Laminate material itself is usually cheaper than the labor to install it.

Cost componentTypical range (per sq ft)
Laminate material (planks)$1.00 to $5.00
Underlayment (if separate)$0.30 to $0.80
Professional labor$2.00 to $7.00
Old floor removal$0.50 to $2.00
All-in installed total$3.00 to $13.00

Waste allowance depends on layout. A simple square room needs about 5%, most rooms use 10%, and diagonal or herringbone patterns or rooms with many corners can need 15% or more.

Room sizeAreaInstalled cost at $6.75/sq ft
10 x 10 ft bedroom100 sq ftabout $675
12 x 15 ft living room180 sq ftabout $1,215
20 x 25 ft great room500 sq ftabout $3,375

Example Problems

Example 1: total cost from room size. You have a 15 ft by 12 ft living room, so the area is 180 sq ft. You use a 10% waste allowance, laminate at $2.50 per sq ft, no separate underlayment, professional labor at $4.00 per sq ft, and no removal or fixed fees. You buy 180 x 1.10 = 198 sq ft of laminate, which costs 198 x $2.50 = $495. Labor is 180 x $4.00 = $720. The total is $495 + $720 = $1,215, or $6.75 per sq ft.

Example 2: area from a budget. You have a $2,000 budget with the same prices (10% waste, $2.50 material, $4.00 labor, no underlayment or fixed fees). The all-in cost of one square foot is 1.10 x $2.50 + $4.00 = $6.75. Dividing $2,000 by $6.75 gives about 296 sq ft of finished floor, and you would order roughly 326 sq ft of laminate to cover it with waste included.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to install laminate flooring?
Most installed laminate floors run $3 to $13 per square foot once material and labor are combined. The laminate planks usually cost $1 to $5 per square foot, and professional labor adds another $2 to $7 per square foot. DIY removes the labor cost but you still pay for material, underlayment, and tools.

How much extra laminate should I buy for waste?
Order more than the bare floor area so you have boards to cut in at the walls and a few spares. Plan on about 5% for a simple square room, 10% for a typical room, and 15% or more for diagonal layouts, herringbone patterns, or rooms with many corners and closets. The calculator adds your chosen percentage to the material quantity automatically.

Does the estimate include underlayment and removal?
Only if you turn them on. Set the underlayment option to a separate roll and enter its price per square foot if your laminate does not have an attached pad. Use the advanced section to add old floor removal, baseboard or trim, transition strips, and delivery fees. Anything left at zero or set to attached is excluded from the total.
