Defined Measurements and Calculations
The calculator performs two defined arithmetic operations. Measure both landmark heights from the same level floor; circumference inputs refer to two different body locations:
Variables:
- D is the vertical height difference; Hhip and Hknee are hip and knee landmark heights from the floor
- M is the arithmetic mean; Cthigh and Chip are the two circumference measurements
Input units can be centimeters or inches; they are converted consistently before calculating. A hip-minus-knee vertical difference is not the full leg length or the diagonal distance between landmarks. An average of hip and thigh circumferences is not a measured circumference at either location. Measure the dimension actually required by a garment maker’s size chart.
What Does “Leg Size” Mean?
There isn’t one standard measurement called “leg size.” Depending on the context, people may mean inseam length (for pants), or circumferences such as thigh, calf, or ankle (for fit or compression garments). The two calculations above describe only their stated arithmetic. They do not provide an inseam estimate, leggings size, compression-sock size or a clinical limb measurement.

Example Problem:
Example: calculate the vertical separation of two landmarks measured from the same level floor.
hip landmark height = 95 cm
knee landmark height = 50 cm
The vertical difference is 95 − 50 = 45 cm, approximately 17.7165 inches. This is the difference in landmark heights, not full leg length or a clothing size.
