Use the tabs in the calculator to (1) estimate pant inseam from height or a measured inseam, (2) get a general leggings size from waist and hip measurements, or (3) choose a starting size for knee-high compression socks from ankle and calf circumference (shoe size optional). Results are estimates—always check the specific brand’s sizing chart when available.

Inseam Estimation (Rule of Thumb)
If you don’t have a measured inseam, a common rule of thumb is to estimate inseam as a fraction of height:
\begin{aligned}
I &\approx 0.45S \quad (\text{men, typical})\\
I &\approx 0.46S \quad (\text{women, typical})
\end{aligned}Variables:
- I is the estimated inseam length (inches)
- S is height/stature (inches)
This height-based estimate is approximate because inseam varies with individual proportions. If you can, measure your inseam directly (crotch to your desired hem while wearing the shoes you plan to wear).
What Does “Leg Size” Mean?
There isn’t one standard measurement called “leg size.” Depending on the context, people may mean inseam length (for pants), or circumferences such as thigh, calf, or ankle (for fit or compression garments). Because clothing brands use different patterns and size charts, the calculator above provides general estimates to help you choose a starting size.
How to Use This Calculator
The following steps outline how to use the tools above.
- Select a tab: Inseam, Leggings Size, or Compression Socks.
- Enter the requested measurements (you can choose inches or centimeters where available).
- Click Calculate to see the estimate, then confirm with the brand’s sizing chart (and consult a clinician for medical compression use).
Example Problem:
Use the following variables as an example problem to test your knowledge (Leggings Size tab).
waist circumference (W) = 30 inches
hip circumference (H) = 40 inches
Using the size ranges in the calculator, W = 30 in and H = 40 in fall in the M range, so the recommended leggings size is M (before any fit-preference adjustment).
