Calculate target distance, size, or angle from any two values, including target dimensions, milliradians, MOA, yards, feet, or meters.

Required: known target size and the mil reading from your reticle.

The real height or width of the target (e.g. 18 in torso, 1 m fence post).

How many milliradians the target spans in your reticle.

Mil-ranging formula: distance = target size × 1000 ÷ mils. 1 milliradian subtends 1 meter at 1,000 meters (or 3.6 inches at 100 yards) and equals 3.4377 MOA.

Milliradian Distance Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the Milliradian Distance. 

Dm = S * 27.8 / mrad
  • Where Dm is the Milliradian Distance (yards)
  • S is the size (in) 
  • mrad is the milliradians (mils) 

To calculate milliradian distance (yards), multiply the size in inches by 27.8, then divide by the milliradians (mils).

How to Calculate Milliradian Distance?

The following example problems outline how to calculate Milliradian Distance.

Example Problem #1:

  1. First, determine the size (in).
    • The size (in) is given as: 35.
  2. Next, determine the milliradians (mils).
    • The milliradians (mils) is provided as: 4.5.
  3. Finally, calculate the Milliradian Distance using the equation above: 

Dm = S * 27.8/mrad

The values given above are inserted into the equation below and the solution is calculated:

Dm =35 * 27.8/4.5 = 216.22 (yards)
