Calculate hours from minutes in seconds. Convert minutes to hours, hours to minutes, or hh:mm:ss time into decimal hours for payroll, timesheets, and homework.
Minutes to Hours Formula
This calculator works in three modes. Each mode uses one of the formulas below.
H = M / 60
M = H * 60
D = h + m/60 + s/3600
- H = time in hours (decimal)
- M = time in minutes
- D = decimal hours
- h = whole hours from a hh:mm:ss time
- m = minutes from a hh:mm:ss time
- s = seconds from a hh:mm:ss time
There are 60 minutes in one hour, so the Minutes to Hours mode divides your minutes by 60 to give decimal hours. The Hours to Minutes mode reverses this by multiplying hours by 60. The Time to Decimal Hours mode takes a clock duration written as hh:mm:ss and adds the hours, the minutes divided by 60, and the seconds divided by 3600 to return a single decimal hour value. The decimal places option only controls how the answer is rounded for display, not how it is calculated.
Common Minutes to Hours Conversions
Use this table for quick reference. Hours are shown in decimal form, the same way the calculator returns them.
| Minutes | Hours (decimal) | Hours and minutes |
|---|---|---|
| 15 | 0.25 | 0 h 15 m |
| 30 | 0.50 | 0 h 30 m |
| 45 | 0.75 | 0 h 45 m |
| 60 | 1.00 | 1 h 0 m |
| 90 | 1.50 | 1 h 30 m |
| 120 | 2.00 | 2 h 0 m |
| 150 | 2.50 | 2 h 30 m |
| 480 | 8.00 | 8 h 0 m |
For payroll, the decimal column is what most timesheets and pay systems expect. A worker who logs 90 minutes of overtime enters 1.50 hours, not 1 hour 30 minutes.
Example Problems
Example 1. You worked 135 minutes on a task and need the time in hours. Divide 135 by 60. The result is 2.25 hours, which is 2 hours and 15 minutes.
Example 2. A meeting is scheduled for 3.5 hours and you want the length in minutes. Multiply 3.5 by 60. The result is 210 minutes.
